Web Sudoku Challenge

3.48

5:24, with a few breaks because my computer is so slow.

My dad is the Ultimate Sudoku Freak. He’s bought like 20 of those “Super Sudoku”-books with 1000 puzzles in each and has already worked through most of them. Mom’s very pleased.

Me, I like those picture puzzles more. The ones where you have to fill in squares and leave others blank and in the end, they form a picture. I’ve seen them referred to by many different names, like Picross, Tsunami, Japanese picture puzzle etc.

Show off. :stuck_out_tongue:
well, almost

Congratulations! You solved the Sudoku in 4 minutes, 43 seconds!

11:01, I’m slow at these things because I always have to count to see what numbers are missing, and I made two mistakes, both because I was looking at one thing and thinking of another. For those that really like these things the Washington Post Express, or whatever the free paper is, has a huge one that’s got five different puzzles that are connected in an X. I tried one a couple of weeks ago and gave up since it took me all afternoon. They come out on Fridays.

My time was 11:01. Exactly the same as Edward The Head, I note.

I enjoy these puzzles and usually go through at least half a dozen per day. I’ve got Web Sudoku bookmarked at work. I have a Sudoku game on my cellphone. I’ve even got a Sudoku book in my bathroom back at home. Okay, I’m addicted. But as my average time of 8:57 on Web Sudoku will testify, I just don’t seem to have the makings of a speed master. I’m much more slow and methodical.

The point of solving puzzles is to enjoy the process. I personally think anyone who solves any kind of puzzle for speed is kind of missing the point. YMMV, etc.

What, I’m not a show-off? 2:56, I tell you again!

I see it much the same way. I don’t hang my head in shame for my slow time…in fact I had one puzzle (in my bathroom book) that took me days to solve – or at least several day’s worth of trips to the bathroom – and that one was marked “easy”. I take more pride in my stubborn refusal to give up than in my speed.

Besides, the whole mental discipline aspect of the puzzle is one of the major reasons why I’m hooked. When my brain starts going in fifteen directions at once (which it is wont to do) I switch over to a puzzle in order to refocus.

Yeah, but telling you that you’re a show off isn’t nice. Telling Bonzer on the other hand, is perfectly acceptable. He enjoys it.

Yes, she isn’t being personal, she’s being personal.

Incidentally, I’ve just had occasion to resurrect this old GQ thread on the combinatorics of Sudoku.

6:05 - a better time then I usually get but I’m not usually consciously working against the clock.

7:45. Usually I can do these easy ones in 5 minutes or so, but I’m used to doing them in the newspaper, not on-line. For some reason, on paper I can quickly see the “missing” numbers much more easily.

Last night was the first time ever I tried one of these. This one took me 33:49. Hopefully I’ll get better, eventually.

5:18 for me. I should do better; I bought the PC version from http://www.sudoku.com and do several a day, mostly on Medium.
(I should have remembered to turn on pencil marks so I would do better.)
