In planning the New York City MegaDopefest the first weekend in January, we have been looking for restaurants/bars that are handicapped accessable to accomodate all of our attendees.
However, we have been having difficulties finding someplace that lists accessable restaurants or bars. The one place that was recommended to us is http://www.wiredonwheels.org/ but that is only really useful if you know what restaurant or specific cuisine you’re looking for. A general search just turns up 200 pages of mostly-unrated resturants.
Does anyone know of online or other resourses which list handicapped accessable bars and resturants in New York?
This bothers me. Shouldn’t they ALL be wheelchair accessible? I know the real world isn’t like this, but I thought all restraunts/bars/stores open to the public had to have wheelchair access. It’s a shame this isn’t the case.
Honey, thanks for the list. I did notice that it was a bit out of date, though, as Bendix closed well more than a year ago.
mnemosyne, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, places of business only have to upgrade to wheelchair accessability when they do a renovation. I would say that most of the restaurants in New York are not accessable because they have not done a qualifying renovation since the ADA took effect. It is difficult on the restaurant owners, because many of them are not on street level (several steps up or down) and/or have rest rooms in the basement. Slowly but surely, the situation is improving, though.
