Website on short lived and obscure nations

I once found this site that had descriptions, about two or three paragraphs long, of all sorts of obscure short lived nations and micronations. Does anyone know what I speak of?

Here’s a list of coins from obscure nations. – The author seems to do a good job of summarizing the nations, however.

This, however, is probably what you want. – A comprehensive list of nations that were simply outcompeted. It is called Footnotes to History.

Ah, it is the second. Thank you very much.

A great site. I ought to know, I wrote it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

That is the best first post I’ve ever seen.

I bow down to the doper-ness that has evidently been brewing within you, Prufrock451. Nice page, too!

Wait, did you mean you wrote the page, or the content? Oh well, either way…

Jake- I wrote the site, the content, and a book based on it (to be published in about a year). Thanks!

If I can ask, what led you to one day say “Hey! I’ll make a website documenting obscure nations!”? It’s a rather odd hobby.

Happened to run across a book once that mentioned a “Republic of West Florida.” Then, the next week, I read about New Atlantis. One thing led to another, and I started jotting down notes to myself. Then, I decided I’d start shopping it around as a book proposal, and got no responses, so I turned it into a website. Six years later, about two weeks ago, I finally got an offer from Greenwood Press, and “Footnotes to American History” is coming out in late 2004.

Just goes to show, kids, never give up on what you want.

From your very interesting site:

You might want to add that after WW II it again was an independent country, until it chose to become part of Germany somewhere in he mid fifties.

In that case I wish to register a complaint (or rather suggest a correction)

There is no such thing in the Swedish language as Ålandöerna. It looks like someone who doesn’t know the language has tried to make up a Swedish name based on the English. We simply call the place Åland.

And oh, BTW. Like the Canary islands Åland is not a member of the European Union, which, among other things, makes it possible for the ferries between Sweden and Finland (and soon Estonia) to sell duty free goods on board if they make a stopover there.

DP- I researched that, actually, and as far as I can tell, it wasn’t technically separated from Germany after WW2 (although the Saar apparently sent a football team to the World Cup). That’s something I need to look at more closely.

Floater- One or two of my sources used the “Ålandöerna” term- I’m not entirely certain where it originated. As for Åland not being part of the EU, I didn’t know that! I’ll have to mention it in my next (extremely overdue) update.

Thanks!

Very cool, thanks for answering!

I visited your interesting site. You mention an obscure Republic of Rio Grande do Sul and fail to mention the República Riograndense wich lasted from 1835 to 1945 and its allied the República Catarinense.

Sergio-

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And as y’all can see, this is very much a work in progress. If anybody else can spot an error or omission, please feel free to tell me!

Looks like this is turning out to be a good thread.

Prufrock451, perhaps an acknowledgment in your book to the finest ignorance-fighting site on the internet would be in order?

Well, there’s still some room left on my acknowledgements page. Let’s see if you guys can beat the traffic boost I got after my review in PC Magazine… Get those blogs churning!

I commited a typing error. The República Riograndense lasted from 1835 to 1845 and not 1945.

Do we get to guess which of them you made up?

Prufrock451:

What about the Republic of Texas?

  1. Republic of Texas, that’s not so obscure, especially in the US and considering it’s still a state.

  2. He doesn’t want to piss off the Texans.
