I would rather admit to an AOL account than a WebTV account. Then, I’m a major tech snob.

I’ve got a little black book with me poems in. I’ve got a bag, toothbrush, and a comb.
Sorry, I am of the pre-computer generation. When I retired, I bought a webtv setup from a going-out-of-busness MW Store for $25. And found the web a lot of fun! And, I found Cecil’s site!!! Don’t hate me for being the oldest doper.
I have a cousin that uses WebTV, he likes it a lot and uses it minly because he lacks computer skills and wanted to get online. Speaking as the family’s computer-question-answering-guy, i’m glad he bought that instead of a computer
If you feel that you must suffer, then plan your suffering carefully–as you choose your dreams, as you conceive your ancestors.
Id rather use free internet access on a 486 PC then have WebTv.
I’ve been online since '94, so I’m far from a 'net newbie, and I used a WebTV for about a year after my old 386 died and I couldn’t afford a new one. Oddly, I still had a desire to be online, even if I didn’t have much money.
The idea that someone who would have flamed me when I was on WebTV would answer me civilly now because I have Earthlink is, well, odd. Life’s too short for silly snobberies.

I have never seen webTV, but my sister loves it.
I think it could have been more popular, if they were able to have more software installed, such as a Chat program, or Java stuff. (WebTV can’t use Java, right?)
All in all, its a great choice for people who don’t have the time or the inclination to get a PC up and running.
That being said, I look down upon anyone who is unable to connect to the internet using their car radio and fluffernutter sandwiches. (Oh, I also look down upon anyone with less than 1500 posts.)

I got my dad WebTv for Christmas. I think those here looking down their noses at people using WebTv should lighten up.
I think it serves its intended purpose of letting people who are computer illiterate surf the net.
When I used to live at home, I tried to teach my dad (who is 58) to use my computer. Watching him try to use the mouse provided me with hours of entertainment.
I’m glad there’s such a product as WebTv out there so that these people won’t keep bugging us on how to use a computer.
Trying is the first step to failure
I know you’re joking, but how does one look down on oneself? Can you show us how you do it at the shindig? I bet even Penn & Teller can’t do that trick!
www.webtv.com/ should answer most of everyone’s questions.

jab1: Trust me, it’s real easy to look down upon oneself. Check out one of the depression threads if you’re not sure how.
My father had WebTV for a while before switching over to regular computers. While the main impetus for switching was accidentally smashing the WebTV box while trying to move the regular TV, there were other reasons as well. Namely, you couldn’t download anything from the Net, and since one of the main reasons my father wanted to get on the Net was to track stock prices, he had to move to a regular computer in order to access some of the sites that would actually keep track of certain stocks and earnings/losses records.
But if WebTV works for you, Mr. Berry, all the more power to ya. I do agree that the tech snobbery is pretty damn silly IMHO.

I would never amend my sig line as a way of reminding people to nominate or vote for me in any way. That would be just tacky.
I use WebTV and I am very computer literate. I just can’t afford a new computer right now, and my ex-husband got ours in the divorce. I do have to admit that WebTV does attract more than its share of users that have no computer or internet savvy whatsoever, simply because it is so easy to use. That’s where it gets its bad reputation from. Manny peoples who are lucky enough to have a computer think WebTV = stupid.
I really like it. It was relatively cheap. It doesn’t take up much room. There’s no Java or Shockwave so you can’t really play too many games. And you can’t download - but then, you can’t get a virus on it, either. While I would prefer a computer, for the money, WebTV is not a bad deal.
Why not use WebTV if it suits your internet needs? Saying you have to have a computer to get on the net is like saying you need a P-III to work out math instead of a much simpler calculator.
Of course, a few years ago when my mother asked me about it (and I could tell she was fishing for opinions on if she should buy me one for Xmas), I about died inside. I have nothing against them, but I do like the occassional computer game and putzing around with other apps.
Oh, and you can get on IRC via WebTV, but you might as well use “I’m A Big Dork” as your Realname information.
“I guess one person can make a difference, although most of the time they probably shouldn’t.”
I agree with the others who said that webtv was intended for those who don’t want to learn how to use a computer. Ive been helping my mom with what seems to be the most trivial things on her computer while she got along fine on the webtv.
We must blame them and cause a fuss before somebody thinks of blaming us.

I considered buying a computer. I even went to a computer store. I asked the clerk to convince me that I need one. He failed! I did have a desier to check-out the WWW, but not enough to buy a computer. I had heared of WebTv, but wasn’t ready as the ISP’s in my area were not yet compatable with it. Then the local MW store went out of business. At that time I learned that a new ISP could handle WebTv. So, I parted with $25 & here I am. My children are scattered around the country. E-mail is a great way to keep in touch! I didn’t realize that computer people tended to be such snobs! But, I’m having Fun! Do loosen up!
For reasons I’ll never understand, the Internet brings out some weird “elitist” quality in a lot of people. Not like that ever happens around here, though. (cough, -gry riddle, cough.)
Rule one of being a WebTV user:
You must post to Usenet. These posts must me off topic to the group, hapazardously spelled & punctuated, either in all caps or applying a liberal chaotic use of caps, and have a sig line which invokes a wrestler or how much everyone but you sucks.
I have to assume that is in the WebTV user rules, since I have yet to see a WebTV poster in Usenet not follow them to the letter.
Yer pal,
Satan
Satan, I confessed to being computer illiterate…I don’t know what the hell yer takking about!..Yer Pal, the
Zymurgist
Utilizing the handy search feature of WebTv, I looked up Usenet. But, as it was full of computer acronims, I’m stillin the dark! But,I think I can live without it! Ignorance is bliss!
i fiddled around on a friends webtv a couple of times about a year ago.
i remember thinking it was a good idea for people who either can’t afford or can’t figure out a computer.(and hey, sometimes i consider getting a priest and some holy water to exorsise this freakin’ evil box)
i think webtv is a great place for internet newbies to get their feet wet.
and if all you want is e-mail and maybe some chat rooms and message boards, it’s really all you need.
if anyone makes fun of you for using webtv, remember, these are the same people who get teased in the real world for driving a '74 AMC Gremlin. this imaginary cyber universe is the only place where they can pretend to be cool.
I’m pink therefore I’m Spam
Whereas all the other ISPs require their users to pass spelling and grammar tests and to prove their knowledge of netiquette before they’re allowed to go online. Heaven knows I’ve never seen a stupid, misspelled, off-topic or inappropriate post from any other ISP.
