As Student Driver pointed out, that’s probably because its title matched the category so well. That’s why I chose it as my answer, even though I’ve never seen the movie and don’t know much about it; but from the title, it’s a pretty safe bet that it is, in fact, a love story (and what I have heard about it tends to confirm this).

It’s a lot harder to think of a famous movie that is a love story than one that contains a love story as one of its subplots. I thought of and rejected many of the other things that people chose, because I wasn’t sure they were primarily love stories. Is Gone with the Wind a love story, or is it a Civil War epic? Is Titanic a love story or a disaster movie? Is Jerry Maguire a love story or a story about people and values in the world of sports agency? Is When Harry Met Sally a love story, or a comedy that takes love, sex, and friendship as its subject matter? Are these examples of the “A love story for the ladies plus a _______ for the fellas” type of movie?

I’m pretty pleased with having chosen The Maltese Falcon, especially-- my first thought was to go with a Hitchcock movie, which a lot of people did, but I figured he made so many that selections would be scattered and none of his movies would gain a high position.

(Nitpick: In the movie mystery category, “Maltese Falcon” is given a different score than “The Maltese Falcon.” Combining the two might be enough to change a few people’s positions in the rankings.)
