Weekly Comic Book Discussion 1/25/2007

As usual, I’m about 2-4 weeks behind. I just was reading the 52 with the hint at the end - week 36, I believe. What an obscure hint! Yes, that’s sarcasm. Also, I hate spoilers on the cover, even though I knew what was coming.

Civil War - Frontline with “Penance” - the editorial direction at Marvel is astonishingly bad. It’s a testament to some of the writers that they can still produce decent stories given the shitty universe they’ve created.

Lastly, RIP Nodwick. It will now be a backup feature in the hilarious P.S. 238. If you aren’t reading P.S. 238, head on down to your comic shop now and start.

Yes. Very mild spoilers for Infinite Crisis, Supergirl, and Supergirl and the Legion of Super Heroes:

At the end of Infinite Crisis, she gets blown into the future or something. She spends time in the 31st century. In the “One Year Later” issue of Supergirl she manages to return from the future (I forget how), and continues on with her life in our time. So, in relation to the events of her own book, the Legion book is in the past. In the future. In the future past. Whatever.

Nodwick’s done? Ack!

Guess I should spoiler this

After Mon-el mentions that he met Kal-el when Kal was Kara’s current age, Mon-el mentions that she’ll meet him (Mon-el) too – after she gets back to her own time. And then he clams up about it. So it’s definately the current, post-Crisis recon Kara.

January 10th entry

Part 1: Sentry
I don’t see the connection as to why this Sentry story is in this book, but I like that it showed his reasoning for joining sides. This type of story is what I was hoping Bendis was going to give us in the New Avengers title a couple months ago.

Part 2: The Return
Let me first begin by saying that I prefer dead characters to stay dead, but acknowledge that resurrections can be done well — Colossus, Winter Soldier to name two instances. I’ll also reserve judgement on the decision to bring him back until I read what they’re doing with the character when Captain Marvel #1 starts shipping.

But…

Of all the places to bring him back, why Civil War? I would think Annihilation would have been FAR, FAR more appropriate.

Captain Marvel would sign up to a warden of a jail that houses people he was calling friends mere days (to him) ago? Maybe I have to re-read this, but I don’t see it.

The last time I checked the Handbook, I don’t recall Marv being all that powerful. I actually think Ms. Marvel outclasses him, so I echo the confusion of how this character is going to make that big an impact if some cataclysmic event happens.
Though I think the people who react as though this is the end of the world need to get a grip and take a breath, I didn’t like what I read in this issue either.

I’m well aware of what he said, but the other interpretation still makes sense.

It all happened in the past… in the future. I love it.

What’s there to get over. I don’t like the direction Civil War has taken much of the Marvel Universe. Long ago, I gave up on anything ‘X’. I didn’t enjoy it, and when I do read an issue, I still don’t. Civil War is just expanding that, although some names do bring me back in, like Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock, Thanos and their brand of cosmic stuff. Fortunately, they tend not to get embroiled in the muck happening on Earth, but this time, they managed to even tie-in The Eternals and Annihilation. I’m not someone who has to own every issue of a title - when something isn’t enjoyable to read, I stop reading (except maybe Legion of Super Heroes - that one I’ve always stuck with through thick and thin).

Mon-el says to Kara:

“I know you. You’ll meet me again later in your life…”

The emphasis is as in the original, not added by me. He is not thinking of Kara’s pre-Crisis version. He has clearly recognized this Kara, and by the timing of her return to the 21st century necessarily occurring after both the original Crisis, and the Infinite Crisis, the Kara he met cannot be the pre-Crisis Kara.

You’re presuming he can tell the difference between the two?

Given that Mon-El onlY MET Kara in the 30th Century, pre-Crisis (and, in fact, pre-Crisis, his time in the 20th century consisted entirely of Superboy’s Big Brother), that Kara had no problem going home to the 20th pre-Crisis (thus making Mon-El’s comment about her ‘finally’ getting home nonsensical)?

It’s entirely ambiguous.

Not really. At least, I hope not.

It’s confusing crap like that which prompted DC to nix the multiverse the first time around. I’ve no problem with a multiverse, but let’s keep them clear and distinct from one another.

Once again, the Official Handbook of the Invincible Universe is the funniest damn book all week.

Warrior Woman and Robot’s Sky-Cycle alone were worth the price of admission.

Picked up the OHotIU Vol 2 as well; Got Robin, Connor Hawke, Fables, and Invincible too.

Also, Twisted Toyfare Theatre Vol 8.
