Well, Countdown sure was bleak!
Enjoyed the Green Lantern origin story over in GL… really enjoyed Legion as usual.

Blue Beetle. The end of the first Jon Rogers arc. And… it all came together. Like Hannibal Smith was telling Jaimie what to do. Here’s to 25 more!
Also, Showcase Presents: Booster Gold. It’s 1980s-riffic!
Countdown - bleak, yes. also, I’m not sure what exactly was the point of resurrecting Karate Kid and Duo Damsel’s lost self so she could be Triplicate Girl again… only to facilitate that. I mean, great, they’ve gotten Kamandi back in-continuity. why couldn’t that have been explained as “that’s one of the 52”, instead of going through all this rigamerole?
Countdown to Adventure - the three space superfriends part was fun, and obviously set up for the next Rann/Thanagar miniseries. the Forerunner backup… has read as though they changed horses mid-stream, as if they’d intended Forerunner to be a big player in Countdown, then decided against it and had to do something with the character.
Blue Beetle - I don’t understand why this book isn’t selling better than it is.
LSH - pretty good, although as the series moves away from its “Teenage Revolution” reboot themes and ideas, I’m not sure what to think about them keeping this continuity around. if they’re going to re-tread ground that the LSH has covered time and again (e.g., Garth’s leadership follies), then I’d rather see the LSH version that’s over in Action right now (and whose sales are apparently better, anyway).
Green Lantern - I hadn’t really seen the point of re-hashing Hal’s origin, but if they’re revisiting the obscure Empire of Tears stuff that’s a damn good idea. little eyeroll at John Stewart showing up to get into a fight with Hal, but at least they remember he’s around.
All-Star Superman - w00t! and here, just last week, I was complaining about how long it had been since the last issue. I’m going to miss this when it ends soon.
Countdown. This started bad, got good, and then… The last three issues have been just dreadful.
Since there are supposed to be four issues left, it begs the question, what the heck are they counting down to anyway? Shouldn't these last issues be building on something, rather than putting it on hold for all this silliness.
Teen Titans Not a bad issue, but the teaser for next issue says “the end of Ravager.”
Gosh I hope this doesn't mean they are killing off yet another member of the Titans. The mortality rate for anyone associated with this team has gotten so bad that they should just change the name to "Red Shirts Inc." and be done with it. There is a difference between killing off a character for story reasons, or for dramatic effect, and "Well, I guess it's time to get out the old refrigerator." :dubious:
Blue Beetle was awesome.
And I may have to pick up the Booster Showcase.
I concur, Blue Beetle was awesome. It always makes me happy to read that book.
Countdown was fine, I guess, although I’m just about zombie apocalypsed out at this point. It does seem that with only a few issues left, they’re wasting a bunch of time on stories like that.
Ultimate Spider-man was entertaining as usual.
Daredevil was good, but yikes…maybe Matt Murdock would benefit from some time in a secluded, woman-free monastery somewhere.
Anybody else getting the impression that they either ran out of ideas or re-structured their plotline on Countdown… and have been writing filler issues to get themselves to one year of issues by the conclusion?
I think they may have mistimed their climax a little, and had to stretch things a bit.
They’ve been pretty open about how they had to retool things after everything Countdown Touched turned to crap (Amazons Attack, Salvation Run, Death of the New Gods, Arena, all commercial disappointments and poorly recieved by critics).
Fortunately, The Sinestro Corps War showed them that they didn’t have to tie every book in the line to work. We’ve been promised that Final Crisis will not directly tie-in to any ongoing book (it does have its own subordinate minise and one-shots) and neither will Trinity, their next weekly.
Sorry, but y’know what I’m tired of in comics today? Crises and zombies.
Thank God they’re not fully combined in any one company right now, or I’d go mad.
Infinite Zombie Crisis on Infinite Zombie Earths…
Nobody tell him about Blackest Night!
Yeah, I’m late, but I was sick.
The Incredible Hercules #112-115: Good fun and well-drawn characters. I’ll be sticking with this one for a good long time unless it gets too bogged down in Skrulls or other MU minutiae (or they give the book back to the Hulk).
Blue Beetle #25: Oh hell yes. That’s the way you sign off of a series, if only for a little bit.
Gargoyles #8: If this was cheaper, if this was just a little bit better, or if it came out more regularly, I’d continue with it. But it isn’t, so I won’t.
Countdown to Final Crisis #5: Okay. By itself this was quite good. I like apocolyptic stories, when told well. But I do wonder what they’re Counting Down to and what this had to do with it. I also wish we got to see the discussion when the heroes decided to leave this world for good.
**All-Star Superman #10:**Great great fun. And an awesome Luthor scene.
Legion of Super-Heroes #40: This is fun, but I have to concur with others that Shooter’s losing the sense of sci-fi crazy fun that, more than the teenage rebellion thing, characterized the early Waid/Kitson issues. While I still prefer this Legion, I can’t really blame the people who’d prefer the retro Legion over in Action. It’s about as well-done and nostalgic too.
Countdown to Adventure #8: The main event comes to a decent, if unsurprising conclusion. The backup just kinda ended. The shuddering changing of gears for Forerunner as she got ejected from the Multiverse plot she was created for still reverberate through her story.
Mighty Avengers 11: Looking for Skrulls? Forget the odd uses of super powers and the green glint in anyone’s eye. Those thought balloons that annoy everybody so are the big giveaway. Simon Williams? We don’t really get to see his thoughts. SKRULL! Natasha? Just the odd cuss word here and there. Possible Skrull. Ares? Almost all of his thoughts are consistent with a Skrull warrior’s. Tony and Carol are the only ones I’m fairly sure aren’t Skrulls, but my money’s on Wonder Man.
Yeah. I was interested when this version was bringing something new to the table. But it’s turned into the same ol’ LSH stories, told again with slightly different characters. If they’re going to do that, I’d rather get the nostalgia kick, too, please.
And it may be that Shooter is retconning out all the zany stuff from this reboot. Colossal Boy this issue was referenced as growing to giant-size (not shrinking down from giant-size). We haven’t re-visited PG’s dual-planar existence, nor Luornu’s outcast status from Cargg. The whole plots of the Service tracking kids, and the xenophobia of Earthers, and the many, many “other” Legionnaires have all quietly gone away. It’s all becoming rather… usual.
Well, Ares is pretty characteristically Ares over in The Incredible Herc, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot, I guess.
