Weekly Comic Book Discussion 3/30/2006

Also…They’re giving those rings out like crackerjack prizes aren’t they?

I DO like that, though. Too bad it’ll probably go away by the end of the arc.

Green Lantern #9: Heh, Lou got owned. A nice one shot issue. “I usually don’t bleed this much on team-ups.”

Green Lantern #10: Hmm, the concept of (from the preview of next week0

Someone hiding the GLs that Hal/Parallax supposedly offed for five years or so is a bit out there for me, but Johns has yet to let me down. Well, other than the whole Power Girl’s “definitive” origin thing, but it actually works in the grand scheme of things.

I too am looking forward to

The Sinestro Corps.

All-Star Supes #3: What everyone else said. Not a great is the first two, but still amazing.

JLA Classified #19: Eh. Kinda a letdown from the previous issue, but much better than the second in this arc. The smackdown coming next issue looks good though.

Action Comics #837: Huge eyed Kendra threw me too, but that’s my only compliant. Loved the ending. Reminded me of this http://superman.ws/tales2/greatestGL/?page=1

I really did, didn’t I? But all things considered, a character named after me could have had a lot uglier or more embarrassing comic book death.

Yeah, apparently you did well with the ladies before your unfortunate demise!

I read the latest Marvel Zombies. Hilarious.

Galactus: “What?”

LOL

Fathom #8: Not bad. Basically setting up stuff for future issues.

Invincible #30: Picked it up on Gamera’s recommendation. Pretty good. I will be looking this series from now on.

What’s everyone’s opinion of Hawkgirl OYL?

I really disliked it and thought the writing was terrible; much too talky. The position of the panels were very disorienting.

The characters in the group all had two things Cap doesn’t have: IQ’s over 170 and total net worths of over a billion.

It puts a lot of old stories in the 70s in a new light, including the Avengers/Defenders war and Defenders vs. Alpha the Ultimate Mutant. That’s right, between the Kree/Skrull War and GS X-Men #1, the Defenders were serious players in the Marvel Universe. Guess that’s out the window now.

One other character who belongs in the cabal: Roger Aubrey, the Mighty Destroyer, who has been doing behind-the-scenes stuff like this since the 40s. Wonder if his group and this one are aware of one another?

The point isn’t that Cap would be smarter or more powerful than anyone else there, the point is, they would all TRUST him, something they can’t say about each other.

I don’t think Namor is particularly smart, and I rather doubt that Stephen Strange is quite that intelligent or wealthy.

Easy:

Strike.

Do it loudly and publically.

Pull the JSA in front of HUAC bit, but realize that the baddies in the current Marvel Universe are a helluvalot nastier than the Golden Age DC baddies. And they’re gonna have a field day.

I mean, yeah, a few super-heroes will cave to the government and reveal their IDs, but, if written in character, about 75% wouldn’t. The Fantastic Four and Iron Man can’t be everywhere and while they’re out stopping Loki or Dr. Doom or Doc Ock, who’s gonna stop the mid-grade threats: Living Laser or Stilt-Man or the Wrecking Crew from robbing banks, and generally running amok.

When it comes down to it, the government needs superheroes much more than the superheroes need the government. And the government doesn’t have any way to handle these mid-level threats (if they do, why are there super-heroes anyway?)

This really doesn’t seem like a well-thought out story.

I disagree. Given the way that our government works, I think it sounds perfectly plausible. It’s poorly thought out with regards to effects and consequences. It shows the governments absolute faith in itself. It’s essentially a cave to the public opinion that something needs to be done. It will even cause far greater harm than good.

Yep. Sounds like government s.o.p. to me.

Not to mention that it springs nicely from the Sentinel O.N.E. program going on in the X-Men. They’re already in with one group of supers, and look at how well that’s working out. Why not go for more?

I’ll give this “event” a chance. It could be interesting.

I totally disagree. Can you imagine Spider-Man sitting back and watching while some supervillain robs a bank or kills someone? How about Daredevil? Naw, a strike would never work.

Yes. And plus, I think that the public would view “heroes” that demanded a total lack of accountablility in exchange for their necessary services very dimly. I mean, people turn on the labor when there’s a garbage strike, how much more so when costumed super-freaks are running about killing and pillaging essentially unopposed?

Woo! A convert! You may want to seek out previous issues or trades for some of the backstory. I think the main draw of the title for me is that it captures a sense of fun that most superhero titles just don’t, these days.

I liked the story. Hated the art. A lot. Which was a disappointment, because Chaykin’s Blackhawk looked positively gorgeous, and was the only Chaykin I read before this.

I definitely picked up on that (“Now who’s gay?”). It feels like pre-Crisis Firestorm, which is a great thing.

I think the problem with the art could be remedied with a new inker. This is my suspicion, at least.
