Weekly Comic Book Discussion 5/10/2006

Heh–I’m only off work for another week, so as much fun as starting these are, I probably shouldn’t get used to it.

Only read two of the books so far.

Superman: In the past, even in JLA/Avengers, Kurt Busiek has had problems hitting the right note with DC characters. Not that his books have been bad or anything, just that his DC books haven’t had the magic his Marvel titles (or Astro City) has had. That’s clearly over. This is the best Superman in years. I love his Lois, Perry, Jimmy and he’s REALLY playing Superman/Clark correctly. I really like his revamps of the classic (yet, let’s be honest, heretofore lame) Superman badguys.

Speaking of bad-guys, I really hope that his set-up from like 4 weeks ago holds up and Luthor is no longer Kingpin-lite. We had that for 20 years and it never really worked for me. Plus, c’mon. How many times is the public gonna buy “No, it wasn’t me, it was my clone.” or “No, it wasn’t me, it was the son of my parallel dimension counterpart disguised as me.”? After the “President Luthor” storyline, there’s no believable way for him to return to his “Just a humble businessman…a dealer in spices and such” type personna. I’m glad they’re acknowledging that.

The biggie this week is 52 and while it’s all set-up, it’s damned good set-up.

First, when did John Henry Irons (Steel) stop being dead? I though he’d died? I’m very, VERY glad he’s back (there are too few heroes who have “Because it’s the right thing to do, dammit” as their motivation as opposed to vengance, guilt or whatever), but is he back because of a S-Prime retpunch or what? Also, what’s super-hero name of his (aargh…) niece? daugher? I’m putting this into spoiler-space just in case his “un-death” event is new.

Second, there’s a fan-theory/rumor I read on rec.arts.comics.dc-universe that I like and there may a bit of evidence towards it. Remember how everyone looked at the end of Identity Crisis and said “Wait…what?! That doesn’t make any sense.” The fan theory/rumor is “Yeah. Guess what. It didn’t and the heroes were so shocked that they didn’t notice. They were just happy to have wrapped it up” The theory goes that Elongated Man will realize that Jean was a red-herring and will find Sue’s real killer. (I hope so)

Third, I’ve been guessing for months (since the demise of Gotham Central) that Montoya would be a new Bat-Character. Looks like I might be right.

I love that Silvania’s a mad scientist again, I love that Mr. Mind is no longer a bunch of mind-controlling worms but a caterpillar with a voice-box, I’ll be very, VERY disappointed if Skeets is dead.

Again, overall, nothing much happened but set-up but damn…it’s good set-up.

What I’m really enjoying about DC at the moment is that it seems like a large group of very talented writers (Grant Morrison, Mark Waid, Geoff Jones, Kurt Busiek, Paul Dini, Greg Rucka) are coordinating what they’re doing really tightly. And it seems as though (from everything I’ve read) they’re doing it from a “bottom-up” perspective, not a “top-down, the editor is MAKING us do it” way. This obviously can’t last forever but while it’s going, I’m enjoying the obvious enthusiasm of the writers and the energy they’re bringing to the books.

In the past, crossovers have ALWAYS been top-down. “The editor says you GOTTA do this.” Peter David actually quit…was it X-Factor during his first run on the series and/or Hulk? some book (or books) because he was being forced to constantly interrupt his ongoing storylines with endless crossovers. This “bottom-up” method really seems to have (for me, at least) brought a huge sense of excitement back to DC.

More later

Jumpin’ the gun, son.

S’allright, I don’t mind. Interesting spoiler notes. Mr. Irons died and was resurrected during the Our Worlds at War storyline. He semi-retired subsequent to that, so he’s been as good as dead.

I got 52 #1 and actually really enjoyed it. I like C-list characters more than the big guns, and it helps that 52 stars some of my favorite second bananas: The Question, Booster Gold, Elongated Man, and Animal Man is due later on. While Infinite Crisis left me cold, I have a feeling this street-level view of the rebuilding DCU might be just what I’ve been waiting for.

This weekend I also picked up a huge stack of Suicide Squad back issues by John Ostrander, edging ever closer to completing my run. All I need are #48 and 58 to have the whole 66-issue series.

52 - my reaction: ‘Wait…that’s it?!’ - but not in a bad ‘Nothing happened!’ way, in a ‘Wait, I want more!’ way. It’s all pretty awsome. I was expecting that last bit with Booster, but it was well done - I felt sorry for the poor guy. I’m liking the direction everyone else is going in, too.

Picked up Detective #818, having missed it before; Nightwing’s about to lose my interest; Battle for Bludhaven stays interesting; She Hulk was awesome as usual; Captain Atom : Armageddon was solid; Superman #652 - Indeed. One of the best Superman titles in a while. I like Riot’s new look, too.

And 52. Interesting to see some things. Spoilers follow.

Zauriel survived Superboy’s blast - yay! Nice to see some confirmed survivors. Bart has red hair now? And apparently, knows the whereabouts of Wally, Linda and the twins? I hope Skeets does survive, I assume it has to do with the more “complicated” time travel rules post-IC that have been alluded to. Sivana’s abduction seems to tie into a larger metaplot they have going One Year Later - the world’s greatest scientists have been abducted, and no one knows how to successfully clone anymore. This is referenced directly in Teen Titans; indirectly (I suspect) in Outsiders, and I’d expect it to show up in Checkmate.

52 Week One: A strong start. The Steel part seemed a bit rocky to me, but that may just be because I don’t know the history behind Natasha. Also, putting up a giant question mark isn’t going to win Vic any friends in Gotham city.

Marvel Romance Redux: A Should have been a blonde: Snort. Okay, I’ll have to pick up more of these.

**Y The Last Man #45: ** I can see where this is going to end up. But that’s okay.

Superman #652: I’m glad they aren’t dragging out the angst. Superman is not about angst.

Jonah Hex #7: Okay, I’m back on the train. That was sufficiently badass to keep me around for another month.

Detective Comic #819: Daylight come and me want to go home.

She-Hulk was great (if disturbing). Dan Slott is the single most underappreciated writer in comics today.

Knights Of The Dinner Table? Yawn. It’s a book by a committee, it’s 3/4ths filled with gaming crap that I don’t care about and it’s the same story, over and over and over. The one time they attempted to change, they just ended up right back where they started. Peter David’s (in)famous “You fans don’t want change. You just want the illusion of change.” comment seems to mirror their mindset. And yet, I’m addicted to the damned thing.

Battle For Bludhaven: Dudes. Too many characters, and absolutely no character development. And if you’re trying to appeal to my nostagia by bringing in Atomic Knights, you’re failing. First, there’s like a hundred and fifty of them, second, I don’t like the costumes and third, they’re not the real Atomic Knights unless they’re riding around on giant mutant dalmations. This is the first Infinite Crisis mini-series crossover book that’s completely failed for me. Plus Bludhaven is probably the single stupidest name for a town in history. I’d hoped they killed it for good when they Chemo’d it. Sadly, apparently not.

Captain Atom: Armageddon. I’m really enjoying this series, to a large degree in spite of myself…I had really, REALLY low expectations. A big part of that is that they’re playing all the characters honestly. A lot of the Authority characters do range from (at best) total dicks to (at worst) facist totalitarian assholes (especially from a DC Universe character’s point of view). And from the Wildstorm universe’s POV, Captain Atom does seem like a total Goodie Two-shoes. I’m really, REALLY dubious about the Midnighter getting up and recovering so quickly. I’m also wondering if they’re going to put Grifter back together somehow.

I’m really starting to enjoy Firestorm. Now that he’s not killing people by using his powers, I’m getting a chance to know the character and I kinda like him.

Um. Nightwing. Er…ok. It was this character that pretty much saved the universe because he was just so generally cool in Infinite Crisis Superman E-2 asks Bats if Bats will join SuperE2 in rebooting the universe. Supes E2 tells Bats that the E2-based universe will be a LOT nicer and generally overall better. Bats asks Supes E2 “Was Dick Grayson E2 better than the current version?” and Supes has to say “No.” which turns Bats against Supes E2.
…so why is he such an indecisive, incompetent, whiney, kinda stupid loser of a wimp in his own book? Blah.

Fantastic Four: First Family, going WAAAAAAY too slow. Yeah, it’ll be spiffy to have 6 (or 8?!) issues to put into a trade paperback, but this shoulda been done in 4 or 5. I’m enjoying it, but not the glacial pace.

By the way, I’ve been rereading some old comics and I noticed something with this batch: there weren’t any thought balloons that I could find. Looking back through the last few week’s worth of books, I found the same thing (at least at first glance). So what ever happened to thought balloons?

You left out the part that makes it the stupidest: the umlaut. In the name of an American city. What is it, the place where heavy metal bands come from?

I couldn’t figure out how to umlaut the “u”.

But what’s worse is that if I remember my one semester of high-school German, the umlaut means that the town is NOT pronounced “Blud-haven” (Long “U”. Rhymes with “Flood”*, it’s pronounced “Blewdhaven” (rhymes with “lewd”, or as in bleu cheese).

  • And why would anyone want to live there if it was?!
Picture Bob Newhart circa 1963 talking into a phone:
“Yeah honey, I got that promotion and the transfer I told you about. Where are we going? Bloodhaven. No “blood”. Yes. Like in hemmorage, trasfusion, vampires, stuff like that. But it’s got an umlaut! No that’s not a type of raisin bun. It’s those two dot thingies that go over the letter U in German words. Isn’t that cool? Of course Bludhaven’s in America! That’s th’ best part! It’s a suburb of Gotham City! Yeah…no. Honey wait. Yeah, I read that report in Time where they talked about how 12 different organizations all agreed said that Gotham used to be the most corrupt and dangerous city in the world. But that changed. I’m sure of it. No…gimme a sec…wait. Lemme check the web. Oops. Well, good news and bad news. Good news? I was right. Gotham isn’t the most corrupt city in the world. Bad news? Bloodhaven is. Um. And it’s the murder capital of the world. Um. But it DOES have an umlaut. Hon…honey? Stop crying…etc”

Clearly, you’ve not been to Newfoundland.

The art in Battle for Bludhaven makes me ache. It’s horrible.

Heh–actually some of those are kinda cool. “Blow Me Down, Port de Grave (Newfoundland)”? That rocks. It sounds like it means something…like it has some history behind it. What does “blüd” mean, anyway? It’s not German for “Blood”, that would be “blut” (no umlaut).

Comments on the story of B4B - I don’t like the portrayal of the Titans. Robin, particularly. They seem to be mostly strawmen for Firebeand to knock down.

The Freedom Fighters and Freedom’s Ring are…I like them, as characters, because I don’t like them as people.

I like the new Atomic Knights a lot, for all that they’re utterly incompetant. And Firebrand’s pretty cool - despite the above comment.

The stuff with Captain Atom seems…odd, given how he returned to the DCU. A year prior.

Superman - This was good stuff. I loved Supes leaping the tall building in a single bound. Especially when he stuffed the landing. Would have liked for them to play out some of it a little longer, but…it’s good. The stuff with Lois was great.

Also got Fables; Ex Machina. And KODT, but haven’t read it yet. And Crisis on Multiple Earths, Vol 4.

Unless there’s some really wonky timing going on, 52 #1 gives us our first post-IC continuity error. Maybe Superboy Prime sneezed.

Crowd scene, at the Superboy ceremony. Nightwing is visible. He should be on a steamship with Tim and Bruce. (Both not present).

Isn’t Jason Todd being Nightwing at that point?

Yeah, like holmes said, there’s more than one guy wearing the Nightwing suit right now and I guess that’s him. Sneaky bastard.

Odd note–

In the last Crisis, I saw somebody in the crowd of heroes who looked a hellava lot like Terra, from the Teen Titans.

She was real, real dead the last I checked.

Anybody else see her?

Yeah, she’s popped up here and there in a bunch of things. She’s back, she’s almost certainly the original, but I think it’s still unclear how she was resurrected.

Thought balloons have been replaced with color-coded caption boxes inthe past few years. Not really sure why, but I don’t think it bothers me.

The trend I do dislike is “pin-up” covers. Comic covers used to be a one page summary of the action taking place in the issue, usually accented with over-the-top word balloons (“I’ve got to stop Destructo from destroying the Earth…But he’s turned me into a MONKEY!!!”) Nowadays you get a cover that’s basically a mini-poster (Ultimate Spider-Man, I’m looking your way) and you can’t tell what the issue is about at first glance. Bah!

Oh and comics are overpriced too.

Bosda:

The original Terra was somehow saved and mind-wiped (either that or cloned) by the Time Trapper. I don’t know if the full truth has ever been revealed.
