Weekly Comic Book Discussion 6/16/2005

Well, brother, if you eat your vegetables and take your vitamins, you might just get a first look at a comic, too.

Yep, it was a preview. As was Astro City: Dark Age. And Livewires. (Which reminded me of Transformers Issue 5, ca 1985)

GLA note: That was not Ultimate Doom. That was Doom in his armor of human flesh, which was in FF a while back. I don’t know WHY he’s wearing it. But he’s also got that Shiny Promethian Armor you never see, too.

Yeah, I forgot about the flesh armor. He got that just before he…went…to…Hell…

AHA! Unless continuity be damned (and this IS 21st century Marvel we’re talking about), this Doom must not be the real deal, which means that the Doom defeated by Monkey Joe (snif snif) was an imposter! Huzzah!

My last : Adventures of Superman - Enjoyed the OMAC tie-in, and the fact that Pete doesn’t seem to have really gone to the dark side.

GLA 3: Starting to slide, but only one issue left, so unless it takes a total nose-dive, it should end fine enough. The hell is with the flesh armour, though?

DoV 3: bounces around happily and makes incoherant squeeing noises Uhm…yeah…that was cool. The attempts to take down Eclipso were incredibly nifty.

Klarion 2: Well, that was interesting…getting vaguely confusing, though.

Hmm. Did I not get GLA #3? I’ll have to check.

Big haul for me last night, but I haven’t gotten to read much yet:

Futurama Comics #20 – The art was a little off-model, but the story was quite funny (written by Patric Verrone, who wrote for the show as well). Bender rips through the fourth wall and leads to Bongo Comics being invaded by Lrrr of Omicron Persei 8. Appearances by Matt Groening, Verrone, editor Bill Morrison, penciller Tom King and others. Also a nice bit of reader participation – you have to synch up pages 6 and 20 in a way reminiscent of a MAD fold-in to tell the story. I wish this came out mor ethan quarterly.

Vimanarama #3 – Oh, so lovely. And I’m not just talking about the picture of Sophia on the cover. Morrison once again proves that he’s the true heir to Jack Kirby with a pro/con-fusion of wild stuff tucked inside a love story (although Vimanarama is much more straightforward than a lot of Morrison’s work). Bond’s art is magical. I wish it weren’t over.

Ex Machina #12 – Opening issue for a new arc. It didn’t quite grab me as usual, but it’s an interesting set-up nonetheless. Plus – nudity! I can’t decide if I really like Tony Harris or not; his art is pretty and his characters are distinct, but his poses really seem unnatural sometimes and people smiling often have a creepy rictus. The dialogue continues to sparkle.

Also, but not yet read, Klarion #2, Rann-Than #2, DoV #3, Gotham Central #32, Simpsons Comics #107, the second Owly volume, and some other stuff I’m forgetting.

Oh crap. Missed that one.

I just got around to reading my TPB of Zero Hour. Eh, nowhere as good as the origianal Crisis. It felt rehashed and forced, but I don’t regret picking it up if just for the history. Hopefully Final Night, which I’m planning on getting sometime, will be better.

Could somebody spoil how Wally and Kyle return and/or tell me in which issues I can find that?

Wolfian : It’s been too long for me to remember the answer to your spoiler question off the top of my head; but I have to say you will probably not be disappointed with Final Night. I thought it was one of the better major DCU crossovers.

You want the individual issues of Final Night? E-mail me, and maybe we can work something out!

It felt like two stories. The primary story With the heroes (and Lex Luthor!) desperately struggling against the Sun Eater, and eventually preparing themselves to go out with along with the rest of the Earth in a whimper, was quite excellent.

But the resolution with Parallax felt tacked on. It’s worse now that we have the knowledge that they’d bring Hal back a couple of years later.

As for Wally in Zero Hour He ended up careening through time, and had a heart-to-heart with himself as a kid before returning to the present. This led directly to the events of Terminal Velocity, one of the seminal Flash stories.

Oh! And that reminds me - Kyle, in Zero Hour - I think he ended up

out in space, with Parallax.

I particularly enjoyed Final Night #3, which has the Phantom Stranger’s best use in a decade.

I got my City of Heroes #2 today - Wow!

Owly: Just a Little Blue – Owly continues to be the most loveable comic on the stands in this, its second volume. Some honest thrills here, in fact, as well as Owly and Wormy making some new friends.

Klarion – The atmoshpere established in #1 is maintained here while the plot is forwarded. I really like Klarion here – he’s so giddy and creepy at the same time. I’m really excited to see what happens next issue.

DoV #3 – A well-executed version of the issue-long fight. Detective Chimp continues to be the best part of the book. Entertaining enough for the time being.

Rann-Than #2 – Maybe this would be of more interest to me if I had a better understanding of the DCU’s various alien races and their politics, but I don’t, and I don’t care to learn. Dropped.

Manhunter #11 – Kate’s hardly in this issue and it hurts the narrative. It’s a story about a bunch of superhero characters that I’m not that interested in. And the whole idea of the arc is a big cliche. This series was so good in the beginning and the current execution is fine, but it’s just a capes book now. This one’s hanging by a thread.

Simpsons Comics #107 – Homer takes over Gil’s law practice. Hilarity ensues. Pretty good issue.

Yeah, the new CoH was much better than anything we’ve read in the previous volume. Who knew Manticore was such a bad ass. I feel sorry for making fun of his costume for the past year. I do feel that (speculative spoiler…)Manticore “killed” Statesman thinking he’d regain his power of Zeus (thus immortality) after the powers were turned back on.
