Weekly Comic Book Discussion 8/24/2006

It’s up. JLA #1 hit the stands this week - still haven’t read it. They’ve altered the covers though, from the original preview image provided…

Jack of Fables #2 - Still good. Willingham can really write. Jack Horner will NOT back down!

Eternals #3 - I still don’t know what the hell is going on but I know I like it.

Action Philosophers - Wittgenstein, Kierkegaard, St Thomas Aquinas! What’s not to like?

Oh, and I picked up the complete Bone finally.

Justice League of America - I find myself agreeing with Superman on all counts during the voting. Even on Bart, who I like. One really interesting thing I note…There seems to be a drug named for, and based on the powers of, Psycho-Pirate. I really love when they do that… Now we know that Boston’s not been retconned out, despite rumours that came up alongside the Deadman Vertigo title.

52 - I love the interaction between Isis, Mary, Adam, and Billy. Also… ‘This has never happened to me before.’ Hah!

Re : JLA.

http://returntocomics.typepad.com/photos/misc/new_jla_big.jpg - Original preview version of the pool of possibles, to be split into two images for the covers of JLA #1.

Changes in final version: Arsenal in Green Arrow’s spot. Reddy in Flash’s spot. Black Lightning in John Stewart’s spot.

Guy in Aquaman’s spot. Captain Marvel appears to be Freddy, not Billy. John Stewart in Black Lightning’s spot. Big Barda in Booster’ spot. Flash in Red Tornado’s spot. Green arrow in Elongated Man’s spot. Zatanna showing a lot more cleavage. Rowr.

Batwoman in Animal Man’s spot. Fire on Fire. (Not referring to auto-sapphism) Nightwing in Arsenal’s spot. Kyle in Ion garb. Hourman in Adam Strange’s spot. Guy removed (but appears elsewhere.) Mr. Terrific in Tempest’s spot. Karate Kid removed. Martian Manhunter in the Question’s spot.

Aquaman, Karate Kid, The Question, Booster Gold, Elongated Man, Animal Man, and Adam Strange were all cut from the cover. I think we know why in Booster’s case - I hope that’s not foreshadowing things for the three other 52 leads cut from the lineup.

Er, four.

Supergirl and Legion of Super-Heroes #21: Ooh. Ambiguous ending. Is he crazy or what? She does seem to be acting oddly even given her circumstances. Plus, maybe they’ll shake Supergirl out of her annoying mode.

Blue Beetle #6: Huh. La Dama can stare down the Phantom Stranger. That’s pretty badass. Pretty good for an archbaddy.

Justice League of America #1: I’m a bit confused about the timeline here. Are Hal and Roy putting together their own League, or are they operating after being invited by the Trinity? Otherwise good stuff. I love the new twist on the Psycho-Pirate.

Astonishing X-Men #16: Actually, I prefer Wolverine this way. Also: Yahbuhwhat?

Batman #656: This is great stuff. The comic pane fight, and our quote of the week: “Man-Bats. Ninja Man-Bats. Alarming Twist.” And from the previews, good, Grant did get the memo about the adoption.

The Flash the Fastest Man Alive #3: Hey, this one didn’t suck! Wonders upon wonders! This is much more like it. Bart’s less angsty, and I’m finally understanding what’s going on. keep it up. Also, I hate Griff more than I’ve ever hated a comic character before. Dude’s a dick.

Birds of Prey #97: I like Alice as the one person everyone in the DCU is afraid of. Especially the big magical badasses. Also, I still note that we never get a clear look at “Batgirl’s” legs. Interesting.

I am a bit confused. In Justice League of America, Diana is Wonder Woman. However in Wonder Woman, Diana is not Wonder Woman. I observe also that the** League ** cover depicts Donna Troy in her Troia costume. So presumably League takes place after the WW storyline is resolved?

Batman - Good stuff…incorporating the art into the…not just the narative, but it’s not really the metastory, either…well, you know what I’m talking about if you’ve read the book…that was really impressive, and it took a few times before I was sure it was deliberate. I don’t know if Morrison or Kubert owns the credit for that, but it’s great either way.

Flash - The new art is a REAL improvement. As is Bart actually being in action.

Well, yes, and it appears to be after the current Flash arc, too. Be very careful not to think that all books published at the same time happen at the same time. I’ll take this point to once again advocate the return to the old style footnotes that explain when stories take place relative to other stories featuring the characters.

Knights of the Dinner Table; Jack of Fables #2; New Avengers #23; Exiles #85; JSA Classified #16 - finally terminating the Amos Fortune arc; Blue Beetle #6 - which has some interesting revelations; Wonder Woman #2 - At Last! Nice guest-star brought in at the end, and a great nod to the powerless Wonder Woman arc AND the TV show. Supergirl #9 - okay, warming up a little; Flash #3 - Ditto. Batman #656 - This is a Bat-Title I enjoy reading. Birds of Prey - nice use of Black Alice. Legion #21 - Hmmmm.

The Justice League relaunch seems very solid, I enjoy the focus on Reddy. And of course, 52 continues to entertain.

JLA- I wish Freddy was keeping the blue Jr. outfit, I like it better. I knew off the bat Hourman was out, he’s useless. Aside from that…made me want to see what’s next. And apparently news doesn’t travel very fast in the villian circles if they still think Pierce is working with Luthor.

Ultimates Annual #2: It actually made me like Cap. Not regular cap but Ultimate Cap. I can understand his disconnect now, a little bit.

Elephantmen: Good good stuff. I’d reccommend at least trying it: if you think that animal-men are silly and campy it may change your mind.

Doesn’t strike me as particularly ambiguous. It’s possible he’s not crazy, but that seems to be the strongest possibility. I mean…it IS Brainie we’re talking about.

Wonder Woman - Nice stuff. Cassie’s a bit of a brat, but…she’s a 17 year old girl…it’s not unexpected. Best line: ‘The glasses have to be Clark’s idea.’

Supergirl - That…that wasn’t half bad. Owen+Kara is a little creepy, actually, but I think it could develop interestingly if an attempt is made.

Freddy’s old outfit is horribly significant in American History. No, I’m not joking. Elvis based his stage presence on it.

And on the Marvel side: Civil War: New Avengers with Spider-Woman is very good. Civil War with Wolverine vs. Namor is very bad. That’s all I have to say.

Who the hell is this Freddy you guys are referring to?

Freddy Freeman. Here.

Elvis is significant in American History? He was an entertainer, and a mediocre one at that, IMHO.

Cause lord knows your opinion on Elvis’ entertainment skills override all the pop culture around Elvis.

Sorry, why you may not have liked him, and I agree he wasn’t that great, he is a significant figure in the history of music and entertainment in general.

And to go back on topic:

I enjoyed JLA #1 quite a bit. I agreed with most of the votes, and I loved Batman and Supes dropping into RPG speech, talking about having a “tank”.

52 was good, but I liked the jumping to the different stories better in the earlier issues.

Astonishing X-men was enjoyable, although I have no idea where it’s going.

Ultimate Spiderman was the same way for me. Enjoyed it, but I have no clue where they’re going with this storyline.

Good visit to the funnybookitorium this week. I got one of the new GL rings. On the downside, I managed to miss my previews order.
