Weekly discussion thread for specific movies?

I’m sure it’s been done, but I can’t make search tell me about how or when. We could work out a way to choose a movie, then leave the thread open for the week. That way, people have time to rent, netflix, legally download or VOD the flick in question.

To decide, we can either make a list of people interested and just take turns, or do it by email vote on a list of options.

Is anyone else interested? My votes for first movie to discuss would be Smoke or A Simple Plan.

Count me in if this takes off. A Simple Plan was a great flick, though it’s been awhile so I’d have to rewatch it. I’ve never heard of Smoke, but hot damn, Steve Gevedon is in it, so it’s got that going for it, which is nice.

I loved both those movies. Too bad I haven’t seen either of them recently enough to partake to any deep degree. Great idea. I say YOU make the call. It’s your thread. If you post it…they will come…

I’ll take part in threads for movies I’ve seen or have access to, but alas, my schedule probably won’t permit running right out to rent every week.

So, that’s a half-assed way of saying I’m in.

I actually run a film discussion group like this in real life. Here’s our site, complete with list of films: Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos

My biggest piece of advice, if you want to do this, is to not worry about “voting” for films but rather choose films you

  1. Wish to discuss
  2. Have enough about them to discuss.

For example, one of our worst films was one of our earliest: The Usual Suspects. Now, TUS is not a bad movie, however, it doesn’t leave much for discussion outside of “Were you surprised? Were you? How about you?” On the other hand, Election featured a raucous discussion that had me and one of my wifes best friends screaming at each other over the worth of over-achievers like Tracy Flick. (Me, I liked Tracy. Of course, I also like Scarlett O’Hara as well. )

Another reason you don’t “vote” is because, in a weekly discussion, you don’t really have time to vote. Perhaps a thread about “Potential movies for discussion” where people can throw in their own suggestions, with you deciding the next movie by a certain time, every week.

Personally, I think bi-weekly (every 2 weeks) would do better as it allows time for each discussion to mature.
