i have seen on many occasions that the real weight of a car is different than the weight quoted on the inside of the front door. what’s the deal?
What’s an example? Car make model, weight on door, real weight, how do you know the real weight?
Is it the towing capacity? Loaded vs un-loaded? Did it take it’s shoes off?
forgive me for being so quick. the car’s sticker always says "front GAWR and rea GAWR. for instance, my brothers’ truck (mazda b2300 extended cab) is 3185 lbs. according to listings on the internet (e-pinions, which seems to be reputable with weights we have checked other cars on that site). however, the door sticker says front GAWR 2555 and rear GAWR 2537 lbs.
what is GAWR?
Gross Axle Weight Rating
The maximum weight, including the weight of the vehichle, that can be place on the axle before it might fail.
Or that’s what came up under google…YMMV <-no pun intended, okay, well maybe a little one…
The label inside the door is the limits you can put on the axles.
The other weights of a vehicle are:
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) The value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of the vehicle. The max your car can weigh with passengers, the load you are carrying and all the fluids.
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle PLUS the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle or trailer being pulled. This is the total weight of the vehicle, passengers, load, fluids, PLUS the total weight of the trailer you are pulling.
Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) The value specifed by the manufacturer as the loaded weight on the axles.
Gross weight (GW) The total weight of the vehicle fuly loaded. The (GW) should never exceed the (GVWR).
I’ll use an example of a vehicle and the ratings are on a 2003 F-250 pick up
The truck as it drives down the road with nothing in it weighs 6,860 lbs. and has a (GVWR) of 8,800 lbs so you could add 1,940 lbs. to the truck. This truck has a (GCWR) of 20,000 lbs. so it could pull a trailer that had a total weight of 13,140 lbs.
thanks guys, really helpful.
