Weiner dog owners, can we talk?

I want a window seat! Moooom, she’s touching me!

right now it’s time for a beer or two. I didn’t have a chance to go out for the holiday, but I could stop by the liquor store for some Guinness Draught.

If you won’t be quiet, I will turn this wiener mobile around and go home!

Is he moving alright now that he’s upstairs? He should probably just stay at floor level for a few days.

It might be that his back meds made him feel better so he overdid it with the friskiness. Now the first dose is starting to wear off and it’s hurting him again.

If his back gets worse or his movement becomes impaired, he should see a vet immediately. There’s probably an emergency vet in your city somewhere.

Nope. They’s friends. Plus, they like to hide behind each other when they get to the Vet.

They don’t even discuss who gets to hide in back?

Nathan is very quiet again this morning, and I noticed he hasn’t had a bowel movement in a while. I hope he’s not backing up again. His last pill isn’t due until later this afternoon but I’m thinking of giving it to him sooner, like when I finish typing this.

As soon as I get off work Monday I’m going by the vet for more meds, and to talk again on a further course of action.

pidgeon92, the link in your post won’t work for me, it says “content unavailable”

Are you able to take him for gentle walks around the neighborhood or park? Might help the back muscles loosen up and could help get his bowels moving too.

Gosh, Baker, this sounds bad. :frowning: Based on what you describe about his behavior, he may have a very painful disc injury. As Merneith points out, the pain lessens a bit when his pain meds are working, but becomes bad when they aren’t. Stairs clearly exacerbate the problem.

I think Merneith’s points are all well taken, that Nathan may avoid evacuating his bowels if it hurts too much to assume the position – that makes a lot of sense – and also that he should see a vet as soon as possible if the pain gets worse.

Has your vet taken any x-rays of his spine? I know my vet’s office offers Saturday hours… maybe yours does, too. An x-ray will find the problem quickly if it is disc-related.

Lewis was acting much like Nathan when I took him to the vet last October. When the origins of his pain were diagnosed, I learned he didn’t have a specific disc injury, just a general narrowing of the discs between his vertebrae. He also had some minor arthritis in his right hip. The vet prescribed pain meds both morning and night, more exercise, a daily dose of Dasuquin (glucosamine) and weight loss. Like your Nathan, he wasn’t a fat Dachshund, just becoming a tad husky.

The combination of treatments worked very well. He was off the pain meds entirely after just one course (lasted about 10 days). I do think the weight loss was the most important component. He’s completely back to his old self, scampering, running, skipping and all. I still give him half a tab of Dasuquin daily.

I hope both you and Nathan find a good resolution soon, too.

I’m ashamed to admit I don’t have a clue how to post any videos. :o I missed a great moment the other day: Doxie was digging a hole, hunting a mouse, and was pretty much shoulders deep. Dixie was on her hind legs, with her front feet on Doxie’s back, pushing him deeper into the hole!

The only health issues we’ve had with our four are when they get foxtails deep down into their ears. The vet should give us a punch-card for those! Well, that and that time my wife ran Doxie over and crushed his pelvis and both hind legs. :smack:

He healed up pretty good, and can sill outrun the pups. He’ll go a couple miles a day, and want to go longer. He just can’t jump anymore and has a little trouble with stairs.

They just eat regular, dry food. I grab what’s on sale, so its a rotating thing. I take them out running just about every day, so they get plenty of exercise, and we got a couple fence acres, so they can charge around all the rest of the time as well.

So, as usual, I ain’t much help.

Poor little Nathan. I do hope the vet can find out what’s hurting him. :frowning:

Let’s try this link…

Nathan’s constipation was discovered after x-rays were taken. The vet says he has a very slight narrowing of one disc, which might have caused pain when he got backed up.

I’ll call the vet first thing Monday and discuss what should be done now. More pain killers I hope.

Again I want to thank everyone for caring. If you all have stories to share please chime in. I like funny stories too.

I’m posting a link here to an image from the front of a sweatshirt I bought. It’s from a high school in Frankfort Indiana. They are the Fighting Hotdogs. This shirt occupies a proud place in my collection of dachshund goodies.

It’s on the second line, far right.

I’m sorry. Of course you mentioned x-rays. My memory is not awesome and I seldom go back and re-read entire threads. I’m very glad to hear it’s just a narrowing, same as Lewis. I think Nathan will improve lots.

Here’s a funny Lewis story. He loves his cats, and they think he is a rock star. He has a special affinity for the eldest female, and she for him. Bitsy will tease him by flopping onto the patio and roll around seductively until Lewis comes round to play with her. He will play-snap and lunge while she bats him around the face, all the while rolling around on her back. Eventually, Lewis figures out what she wants, grabs her by an ear and then pulls her around in circles. She seems to love it. When she tires of the game, she’ll give him a good smack with her paw (claws retracted) and he backs off. It’s pretty funny to watch.

A friend had come by for lunch one day, we were sipping wine on the patio and the two playmates were engaged in this game. My friend gasped and said, “Holy shit!! Did Lewis just kill your cat??” She couldn’t imagine a cat putting up with, let alone instigating, such behavior.

I’m interested to hear more about the lurking horror’s “rage filled little asshole.”

I’ve been shamed into action. For your viewing pleasure:

More to come, maybe.... took all day to upload that 2 minute wonder.

Why diable the comments? I wanted to say how cute they are!:stuck_out_tongue:

Right now I am despairing. Nathan managed another poop, but now he won’t get up to leave the pads I have for him. I tried to pick him up and he cried in pain.

I called my vet to leave a message and the message gave the name and number of an emergency clinic. I got hold of them to try and find out if I can get that pain med for him… Right now I’m waiting on a return call, they are trying to contact my vet.

I am finding it hard not to just sit here and cry. At this point I’ll do literally anything to help Nathan. I’ll mortgage the house if that’s what it takes.

Please pray for Nathan.

Hang in there, Baker. Dogs are tough, he will get through this. It’s the calendar’s fault you can’t get immediate relief!

Ask them about giving him aspirin if you can’t get tramadol or rimadyl right away.

I vaguely recall aspirin being bad for dogs. Perhaps they need a much lower does than we.

upon edit:
“Despite how safe it is for people, it is not usually recommended for use in dogs due to the risk of bleeding, with NSAIDs created especially for pets (e.g. Rimadyl®) being the more popular choice for treating pain and inflammation, particularly if long term treatment is needed. If you do use this medicine make sure your formulation does not contain any extra active ingredients such as acetaminophen which can be toxic to dogs.”

The emergency place called back, they couldn’t get hold of my vet. To prescribe him anything now they say they’d have to see him in person. I tried picking him up again but he cried more.

I’m going to call my boss and ask if I can go to work very early, so I can either break off and take the dog in a 7:00AM, or atl least a little after that.

I’ve been following along with this thread, and just wanted to chime in and send good thoughts Nathan’s way.

My dachshund, Jake, dealt with some serious disc issues, and went through two surgeries. It was heartbreaking to see him in so much pain, but I was fortunate to have some amazing vets taking care of him.

If your emergency vet’s office is like the one we have here, they are open 24-7. It might not be a bad idea to go ahead and take him in now.
