Weird and annoying smart TV behavior

LG smart TV using a Firestick.

I have no complaints except one admittedly very minor irritation. When I turn the television on using the Firestick remote, it takes me to the LG welcome screen. From that point on the only remote button that functions is the power on/off (maybe the volume also, not too sure).

So, what I have to do next is power the unit off, then turn it back on again. At this point I arrive at the YouTubeTV welcome screen and the Firestick works fine.

I could use the LG remote, but I prefer the Firestick remote and would like that to function without the on/off/on nonsense. I have re-booted the Firestick with no effect.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I’ve had an LG TV for a couple of years and the behavior you described (of the TV starting in the LG welcome screen) is new as of a month or so ago, with a recent update to the webOS that runs the thing. I haven’t figured out how to change it yet, though I haven’t tried much. In my case, I want the TV to start with the cable box as the default source.

What I’ve done is to hit exit on the remote and that seems, most of the time, to exit the welcome screen to, I think, the last thing I was watching on the set.

I’m not sure if this is the answer but maybe something to think about. If the TV comes on immediately when you press the power button on the remote, then it sounds like the remote is sending a power on signal to both the Firestick and the TV at the same time. This could mean that the TV is powering on before there’s any signal from the Firestick, so it just goes to the welcome screen.

I’m not familiar with Firesticks or their remotes, but for my Chromecast I would change the configuration to something like this. Change the remote to not send a power signal to the TV and instead configure the Firestick to send an HDMI CEC power on signal when it starts up. Now the startup sequence is power button on remote turns on Firestick which will then turn on the TV when the HDMI signal is ready.

I have no idea if this is fully feasible with a Firestick, a Firestick remote, and your particular brand of TV, but it’s something to look at.

Do you have a “source” button on the tv remote ?
Maybe you could remove the TV option (somewhere in the settings menu)
from the available list of sources, leaving the firestick (ie the port it’s
plugged into (eg USB or HDMI1 or whatever)).
(That’s sort of how my set up works … my TV’s channel select stopped working
so i got a freeview tuner (cheaper than a new TV) which is plugged into HDMI1.
I removed the TV option from the list of available sources and it starts up on HDMI1.)
ETA: obviously that will only be useful if you only watch via the firestick …

I haven’t bothered to change the setting on my LG set, but just googled to see how to disable the LG welcome screen and found a page that says:
Settings > General > Home Settings > Home Auto Launch > On/Off

I’m out of town so I can’t test this for myself, though.

Thanks, all. I think @Dewey_Finn nailed it.

I had to hunt a bit for “Home Settings”. My path was:

Settings (button on LG remote)>General>System>Additional Settings>Home Settings>Home Auto Launch

So far so good.

It’s not the TV, it is the inability of the 3rd party apps to play well together with your TV. This is a common problem these days. Sometimes there is a solution, and sometimes you just have to grin and bear certain inconveniences.

In your specific case, is the Firestick remote not programmable? If it is, your model of TV has a code associated with it. You have to find that code on the remote and choose it to link your TV to your remote. If you are lucky, your remote will have an auto search and find the code and link on its own.

Thanks, Jasmine. The Firestick remote does work with the LG TV, but not until I power on, power off, and then power back on again.

However, I think my issue is solved (see my post above yours).
