Can you help me confirm my suspicions? My boss has a charge on his credit card from Ozolsmegi Security Essent Liepaja for 69.95. I suspect this is that bastard AV Security Suite fake antivirus.
I’ve done a bit of Googling, and the only hit I get is a reference by someone who also had this charge show up on their card in the comments of dedicated 2-viruses.com talking about how to remove AV Security Suite.
Anyone else seen a charge like this?
(I’m calling our computer dood to come and take a look at his machine, but I wanted to confirm if my suspicions were correct.)
Are these things new, or going crazy lately, or what? I’d never even heard of this virus before, then I got it on my work laptop last week, and my husband got it on his home computer the next day. (I got it off my laptop ok, but his computer may be done for).
Probably a good idea dump the credit card… who knows where those numbers might end up. Sure, the AVSS people might be fraudsters with integrity and a strict moral code against letting anyone else steal from the people they’re stealing from, but you never know.
My guess would be that it’s more likely that a third party with whom the boss does business has had a database compromise.
But, then, I’m just a security guy, so what do I know? Seriously, being a security guy can sometimes make us immediately think “the database is compromised - all our base are theirs!!” Even when there’s an Occam-like reason available.
My advice (in addition to what others recommend) is to check with the credit card company and scout about for other nefarious charges. Play detective (and possibly become the boss’s hero).
It happened to my dad’s computer, then a few days later, it happened on mine. I’m pretty on point with my protection of my computer, so I think that is the first major issue I’ve had in a long, long time.
