I was searching for a link to the Is it down for everyone or just mesite, so I went to google, typed in “is it” only to have google suggest I search for “is it normal to eat your period blood.” Are that many people searching for answers to that question? Anyone else get any weird suggestions lately?
And while we’re here, is there a way to turn off the google feature where it “corrects” your spelling and gives you the results it thinks you want instead of the ones you actually do?
The classic example is “why won’t my parakeet eat my diarrhea”, which used to come up when you typed “why won’t”. These days, you have to type as far as “why won’t my p” before it comes up.
It seems like if you search for something unusual once, Yahoo remembers and will try to help you out the next time.
A few years ago, I was amused by the stories about the penguins that were outfitted with little wool sweaters to wear after being affected by an oil spill. (The sweaters kept them from preening and ingesting the oil.) Anyway, I wanted to see pictures of the little penguin-sweater-wearing birds, so I did several searches for “penguin sweaters” and “pictures of penguins wearing sweaters” and the like.
To this day, all I have to type is something starting with ‘p’, and Yahoo will suggest Penguin Sweaters.
If Yahoo really does that, I imagine most of its users see a very different list of suggestions when they type a “p”.
Talking of which, I notice that if you start typing something that could be construed as unsavoury, Google Autocomplete gets all coy and says “Press Enter to search”.
Or at least, it used to. I just tried it out and it was happy to suggest some smut. Odd.
I used to give instructional sessions to teachers and students, and one of my examples of why Google is making their research in databases harder, I stumbled across the autofill suggestions for “why”; having a significant number of teachers giggle over the suggestions of “why is my poop green” and “why do men cheat” (among others) was quite amusing. Google suggestions can be helpful, but are often a bit perplexing.
I am, however, thinking of trying to persuade Google’s autofill by searching “why does fiber make me sad?” on a regular basis from multiple public computers.

Several years ago I started to search for something (I don’t remember what) beginning with the digit “2”. Google auto complete instantly suggested “2 girls 1 cup” and I thought that was an odd string. I intended to come back later and search it to find out what it was… Fortunately I heard through other means before I remembered to do it.
