My high school was the first public Math & Science school in the country - it served as the model for schools such as IMSA in Illinois, MSMS in Mississippi and (I think) Thomas Jefferson in Virginia.
It was built on land bought for one dollar from the City of Durham, in a building that was formerly the main hospital for the city. The first few classes had students old enough to have been born in the hospital. On their birthdays, they would celebrate in the room in which they had been born.
The dorm in which I lived at said school was literally falling apart. One portion of the building had to be re-attached to the rest, to keep it from falling off.
When I worked at Kinko’s, we were told in orientation that the founder named his store after his nickname - he has kinky hair - hence Kinko’s, not a copy or printing term - from his fucking hair.
The first time someone told me to go to “the copy shop up the street—it’s called Kinko’s”, I thought they had to be kidding. And I never could figure out what the name could possibly be derived from! Thanks for clearing that up!
Bob Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia, went to my law school. At our university tavern, he was crowned half-yard drinking champion for his feats in the art of beer drinking.
There is another record attributed to Bob – that in 1952 he drank 3 schooners (read: big beers) in 9.3 seconds – but he claims not to remember this achievement.
