Weird hard disk problem

My desktop PC, running Windows 10, has an SSD hard drive. It’s nice, but not that huge (half a terabyte), so I have a couple of (regular) external drives attached to it on a regular basis to supplement my storage space and for backup purposes. Every now and then - maybe once a week - my PC will suddenly forget the external hard drives exist. They’ll disappear completely from This PC, and nothing I click on will make them reappear. Then, a minute later, they’ll be right back where they always were, with my antivirus asking me whether to scan the “new” disks.

The first couple of times it freaked me out, but now I view it as a petty annoyance, and only a problem when I’m downloading something big. Still, I can’t find any explanation for why this is happening, and I’m afraid that one day my hard drives will go away and won’t come back. Anyone have any idea why this is happening to me?

USB glitch?

Update your OS and drivers, and also go to the Device Manager and just see whether “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” is selected, also “USB selective suspend” under Power Options. However, the drives should not disappear while downloading,… Also the usual malware scan, etc.

Best if you can figure out a way to consistently trigger the phenomenon, that way you can narrow it down.

PS also, as soon as it happens, look at the system event log using psloglist or wevutil and see what it says. Also see whether or not similar errors occur running Linux, if you sometimes use that.

Ok, thanks. I will.
