What kind of weird hobbies have you done / heard of? One of my favorites is language creation (http://www.zompist.com/kit.html). Fun AND pointless.
Seeing how many types of cheesburger I can eat, so far I’ve gotten regular beef, venison (deer) and buffalo. I’m so bored, please send me something to read…
Hey, try collecting squished pennies sometime. I love them.
Heck, I’m going to FLA for a vacation and I’ve already hit the penny squishing guide to determine where along my route the machines are located. I’ll be squishing pennies while wrestling alligators!
Hello!
I’m a taxidermist. When I get bored, I sew wings and extra heads and wheels and things onto the taxidermed rats.
But i’m not weird like you people.
Turp, I know I’m a freak for this, but: is there any possibility of me acquiring a wheeled rat?
Reminds me of a story. There is a railroad around here and the train runs quite slowly, so I like to put pennies on the tracks and have them crushed. One time the engineer got out, picked up the pennies, gave them to me and told me that next time he would call the police. The train runs extremely slowly when departing from the station (where I put the pennies) and would have NO chance of tipping over because of a millimeter-thick circle of metal. I never knew there was a law against that.
Yeah, I was there w/ jellydonut, we’re in the same town. The funny thing about the story is the guy was like 80 yrs old, and he comes up to us, gives us the pennies back and says that he’d call the cops. He hobbled off. I couldn’t stop laughing, I just had the mental image of him chasing us w/ a cane. We live in a hick town…
I would never call you a freak, darling.
It’s highly possible that I could make a wheeled rat for you, all I have to do is find some old toy truck at a thrift store for some wheels.
It costs me $10 to order a dead rat from the science supply company, but I’m sure we could work something out.
One of these days I plan to sell some of these ratties on e-bay.
The last rat I made with wheels had a little silver rope going around the rats collar so it resembled a sick and twisted child’s pull-toy.
I collect dead relatives. Well, not their physical bodies, but you know.
I like to do duelest fencing in the SCA.
I’m not really competing with a taxidermist creating mutant rats I know…
Hey, don’t knock language creation! It killed many a boring calculus class. That and cryptography…
…anyway, weird hobbies. Well, I create languages, I make odd encryptions that don’t involve a computer–God help me, I have no life–and I collect boxes. Yes, that’s right. Boxes. Because you never know what could be inside .
My best friend, incidentally, makes clothing and other items out of duct tape. However, since that is fast approaching trend status in this area, I’m sure she’ll move on to something else soon.
Fencing? tsk I do real swordfighting, albeit padded. (no offence intended … with my group the debate of fencing vs swordfighting is as heated as the debate of Mac vs Windows and is often compared to the debate of middle school flag football vs rugby)
I also learn alphabets, translate French poetry, indulge my monk instinct for copying by hand, and I used to collect sugar packets. Oh, and I play the djembe like a fiend.
I collect movie ticket stubs. Only movies I’ve personally seen, and only tickets with the name of the movie printed on them. I’ve got about fifty. Sometimes I sort through them if I need to think of a movie to rent.
DragonBlink, I also am in the SCA, and a fencer. But I also fight “heavy weapons”. Full contact, full speed, and the only “padding” is your armor. It is a TON of fun.
And it also gets the word “NEE” yelled at you when you walk around in public.
O
Nothing wrong with swordsmanship. I myself practice kendo and study everything I can find relating to classical combat I can. Still doesn’t hold a candle to wheeled rats.
Oh, and yes, the SCA is a TON of fun.
That wet blanket needs to be baptized at the font of knowledge:

I make 3D stuff. Stereograms, Anaglyphs, Polarized 3D Shadow Projectors (my own invention as far as I know,) SIS’s, etc. When I have a suitably stable garage I want to set up a l’il holography table. Whoohoo.
I embroider. Embroidery itself is not that weird, but it’s usually associated with old ladies, not men in their 30s. You can see an example of a design I embroidered here. Note, this is done with an embroidery machine, not by hand.
I collect CDR recordings of Grateful Dead concerts, and some other bands as well. So far I have about 6,000 hours of live material on disc. It may be weird, but at least I know I’m not alone, since I trade with hundreds of folks from all over the world. Oh, I should probably note that these are not illegal “bootleg” recordings. I only trade music from bands that allow recording & nonprofit trading.
Here’s a good one, scripophily.
I also have been working on inventing a language. Purely on my own, without using a “kit.” Another hobby I have is translating ancient Tamil poetry.
