Turpentine, you are the coolest person in the universe. I wish I could say I had a hobby half as creative and interesting as yours! I think if you ever decide to sell your creations you could make a fortune.
This thread is depressing me a bit because it is making me realize what a boring person I’m becoming. Not only do I not have any weird hobbies, I can’t think of any normal hobbies I regularly engage in these days–unless you count beer drinking and napping.
Ok. I do collect rusty metal stuff. When I’m out and I find a cool rusty metal bit on the ground, I bring it home. I hang some on the wall and make little impromptu sculptures with some.
Well, when I was younger, I used to collect paper bags. Bags you buy stuff in from fancy stores, bags with pretty pictures on them. I don’t think I’m alone in this department. IIRC, Juniper and I talked about this weirdness at the Ann Arbor Art Fair. I don’t do it anymore. When my mom sold the house I grew up in, she found a huge box under my bed (I was in the military at the time) with a gazillion bags in it. Well, at least it wasn’t a box filled with drugs!
Now I do aromatherapy. No, I don’t think it will cure cancer, but I’m fascinated with making my own bath supplies (massage oils, bath salts, etc) and the like. I make my husband’s mouth wash and he loves it. I also make my own facial products (exfoliant, cold cream, toner, etc). Saves a ton of money. I’m a lover of good smells and making things smell good so it fits. Much fun although the oils can get expensive. Next on my list to buy: frankinsense (sp!), myhrr, and clary sage.
I would more often, if only I could find other people that were just as sick as I am.
One of my old associates from high school had a hobby of taking whatever machine or computer he could possibly find and tinkering with it. Even if only to take it apart and put it back together again. He was terribly mechanically minded and ended up building lots of neat little gadgets.
Well, BunnyGirl, if there’s anything I can do for or to you while you’re in Chicago and drunk off your ass, let me know. Since BunnyBoy won’t be around.
And just so I’m not hijacking this thread any more than usual, I’ll give another weird hobby/interest:
Medicinal herbs. Very intrigued with the idea of using plants as medicine. Digitalis comes from foxglove, willow bark has precursors (salic acid??) to aspirin in it. Get a ton of books at the library about it and read about everything I can put my hands on. Grow a few in my yard. Problem is, I’m never sick so I can’t practice on myself. Whether that’s good or bad, I’ve yet to determine.
I play Counter-Strike online. I spend most of my evening hours chasing people’s avatars around a map while trying to shoot them, stab them, blow them up with a hand grenade and preventing the terrorists from killing all the hostages.
Sounds thrilling, huh?
Let those of you without pointless hobbies cast the first grenade!
Playing MAME on a regular PC just wasn’t cutting it for me, so behold my hobby. My site’s motto: “Always imitated, sometimes duplicated, but never updated”.
I collect the little stickers that you find on fruit, and lipsmackers lipbalm stuff (alhough these aren’t really active hobbies - I just see them and save them).
If you get to Wisconsin’s House on the Rock sometime, you’ll have a great time squishing them… There must be about a dozen or so of those penny squishers in there - along with thousands and thousands of other things to see. Well worth a couple days wandering through it all…
