My apologies, but this will be a drive by. I’m on the road atm, and probably won’t be able to sit down to read any replies to this thread until this evening when I’m back in my hotel room.
Ran into a weird issue starting yesterday concerning my iPhone. I’m not sure what, if anything, I did, but sometime yesterday my phone started playing my audio book files in an odd way. Basically, it appears that it’s playing them at a slightly faster speed, so that the reader is almost hurried when speaking. Not greatly so, but like playing a record at just a slightly increased RPM. I thought it might be my headset at first, but even turning it off and using the iPhones speaker it’s playing the same way. Then I thought maybe the audio book file I was listening too had gotten corrupted or something (this started about 2/3rds of the way through the book yesterday), but I finished that book last night and the next in the series is exactly the same. I’ve tried to shut down the phone completely, but that didn’t seem to make any difference either. I did a quick look over the settings, but I don’t see anything that effects audio performance in there that would have this effect on the books. I recently updated the iPhone when a new version came out, but it wasn’t yesterday.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. It’s…annoying. Usually the reader of this particular book series has a nice, smooth and even whimsical voice, but now it’s hurried and a bit tinny sounding, and it’s just…off.
I agree with kayaker - check the upper right of the main Play screen while you’re in the audiobook - just under the Remaining time listing, you should see a little white box icon- if it says something other than 1X - the speed setting has been changed. Press the little icon to switch between 1X 2X & 1/2 X
It’s easy to bump this part of the screen accidentally - especially while moving the iPhone.
This has got to be the worst feature I’ve ever encountered on the iPhone. It’s confusing, annoying, and I’ve never met anyone who used it on purpose (cue the hundreds of people who do so).
I discovered it when my Mom called me up and said “My iPhone sounds all squeaky”. That was a joy of a troubleshooting session.
Maybe it’s for some sort of legacy audio files or something. I had no idea you could even change this until this thread and kayaker pointed it out. A quick google search and sure enough…there is a silly little button that you can use to change the speed. I’ve had an iPod Touch and iPad/Iphone for about as long as they have been out, and I’ve never even noticed that button before, or had any sort of issue with it before this.
Again, thanks to everyone for responding and helping me out on this. It was driving me absolutely nuts!
