I recently got a nasty virus, which I have gotten rid of for the most part. Using Firefox, google search still hijacks the search and leads me to crazy places. I changed it to AVG search. Funnily enough, IE doesn’t have this issue.
But now, when I get online, after a while, my speakers start playing the audio of a video. Even when I’m not actively surfing.
You seem to be saying you still have malware. Which particular piece is causing your issue is not relevant as you need to get rid of all of it. See the top sticky thread in this forum.
Thanks, I have followed the procedures. I apparently do still have malware. My posted Hijack This to one of those forums listed has gone without a response so far. I have run several antivirus programs including Malwarebytes which I think is one of the best.
But now I have more information that perhaps someone familiar with this particular situation can help with?
It only happens in IE. More specifically, it runs through IE, even when I have not used it. I never use it. But it is running itself in the background. When I end the process the sounds go away. But minutes or hours later iexplore.exe is running again. Even if I have not even hit the internet, it starts.
I’ve found free online AV fixes will only get you so far, and at some point a professional AV suite is required to root out particularly stubbon malware or viruses. You can usually get Nortons or Kaspersky for around $30 or so on sale.
If you are keen on continuing to use IE and Firefox in the future, you may want to check out Spywareblaster by Javacool Software. There is a free version for personal use. It isn’t an active cleaner, so it won’t help you get rid of what you have, but once you do have a clean system it will block a lot of potential activeX exploits in both those browsers.
It also allows you to backup your Hosts file so that in the event you do have a browser hijack, once the active malware is gone you can restore the host file and get rid of the redirects.
And it allows you to lock the IE homepage so that another program can’t change it.
As well as several other customizations that will help minimize or eliminate the damage from attempted browser hijacks.
I use Spywareblaster and a reputable antivirus package and knock on wood, no problems for years. Of course I’ve been using Opera as my browser for years as well and it has built in malware and phishing protection.
Lastly, in the distant past I had great success cleaning up after malware with SPybot Search and Destroy from www.safer-networking.org however I haven’t used the product in 2 or 3 years and don’t know if it is still as good as it was. YMMV
Yeah, that one has hit four of my users’ machines. Its a very, very nasty one to get rid of. I’ve had to reformat the machines to finally get rid of all the traces. I’m pretty sure its a bootsector virus that does it, but our policy here is that if I can’t clean it off after 6 hours of work, the machine gets reformatted.
