Inspired by driving behind a car today with stickers for the
Kansas City Chiefs
New York Mets
Anaheim Ducks
So three different sports, and each team is in a major city on both coasts and also in the middle of the country. Wondering how that person got their weird assortment of cross-country teams.
In the 90s, about 1/5 kids who had Starter jackets repped the Charlotte Hornets, even though they lived nowhere near Charlotte. I don’t know if it’s because the kids liked the colors or if the Hornets were always the last team left on the rack.
I had a friend who was a huge Redskins fan, even though we’re from Cleveland. No idea where he got that from.
Don’t know another soul who follows two hockey teams, but since the 80’s I’ve been a 50/50 fan of Canucks/Flyers, with the latter waning on my radar in the last ten or so years, admittedly.
My three favorite teams are the LA Lakers (NBA), Chicago Cubs (Major League Baseball), and Florida Gators (college sports). I’m a Lakers fan because of Kareem’s performance in Airplane!, I’m a Cubs fan because I’m from Illinois and they were always on WGN when I was growing up, and I’m a Gators fan because I wanted to go somewhere nice & warm for college.
I am a fan of three professional teams from three different cities, in different parts of the country, each of them more than 1000 miles from any other. They are where I lived when I first started following those sports.
People are often confused because they expect me to support the Red Sox because I support the Celtics, but I lived in a different city when I started following baseball 30 years ago, and the team there was going through a Golden Age at the time.
Similarly, I was living in a city when my employer forced me to attend all the home NFL games with clients. The fake enthusiasm I had to gin up became real after a few years.
In the '90s, i was friends with a guy who was born and raised in Albany, NY, and had lived in the Chicago area for most of his adult life. His favorite sports team was the Green Bay Packers – the reason was that, when he was a little boy, and first watching football on TV, the best team was Vince Lombardi’s Packers.
A good friend of mine (born and raised in L.A., went to USC, worked till retirement in one of the adjacent cities governments) oldest son (also born and raised in L.A.) is a Die-Hard New York Yankees fan. In fact, I’ve never seen him not wearing a Yankees shirt/Jersey/hat ever. His mom says that’s all he wears. We would go to Southern Cal games and he’s wearing a Yankees Jersey.
This last ski season I found a Brand-new Yankees hat. At least I know who to give it to.
