Weird router problem

I have an Alcatel/Thomson ST780 router.

Whenever I am downloading something at full speed, there’s a clicking sound from the router (like a circuit breaker tripping) and the router becomes dead. When saying dead, not only I will lose internet connection but also cannot even access the router setup page.

After maybe 30-60 seconds there’s another clicking sound and the router comes back online. I don’t have this problem if I throttle the download speed. It only happens when I am using about 70% or more of the bandwidth.

Not at all helpful, of course, but I’ve dealt with a few Alcatel-Lucent LANs.

I try to avoid them…

The click is probably an over-temperature cutoff switch. Are the vents blocked, mucked up with dust, obstructed by stuff around the router, etc? Does the router itself feel hot when it cuts out? Has it always done this or is this behavior new?
