Weird, there's another me!

Well he’s not Agent Towers, for a start.

Two more that often have me confused: Quasimodem, also known as our good friend, Bill, who joined in 2000, and the almost identically-named Quasimodal, who joined in 2003. Both long-time active members in very good standing here, but darnit, sometimes I just have to look twice to make sure just who is posting what.

Not weird at all if you have a really common name. When I lived in a city of 170k or so, about 15 years ago, there were 7 of me in the phone book.

I remember someone being jumped upon for picking a name with “Wally” in it many years ago. I wonder if that was the OP’s friend. People asked him to change his name because it reminded them of WallyM7, a very prominent poster from the early days of the board who was, at that time, generally believed to have died in a tragic accident in 2000. Years later, it was revealed that this accident was never confirmed to have actually happened, so I wonder if folks would have the same reaction to the name today.

There’s a new world somewhere
They call The Promised Land
And I’ll be there some day
If you will hold my hand
I still need you there beside me
No matter what I do
For I know I’ll never find another you

I asked a similar question here a few years back due to there being several similar versions to my nick- there was MTCicero (subsequently banned) and then there was Cesario who was a kiddy diddler and got chucked out.

It can be confusing. I think Admin has done a good job here sorting this out. And I dips my lid to Crooked Teeth.

So, where is this Crooked Teeth now? Her first post is much anticipated. Better be good.

*You *are Number Six.

When I chose the name GuanoLad, which I use across the web, I thought not only that it was 100% unique, but nobody in their right mind* would ever choose to use it themselves anyway. Plus, I made it up in the mid 90s for a comic strip I drew, so I figured it was mine to do with as I please.

But it turns out there is one other person who has the name. He is in the UK, and I only discovered him when I tried to sign up to Flickr. I messaged him, and he claims to have made the name up almost a decade earlier than I had. Since then, when I Google myself, I’ve noticed him posting to various places across the web that will never cross over with myself (wine sites, for example) so in the end it worked out rather well. Weird, though.

*I, of course, am not in my right mind.

I’ve found at least two other people using my user name at other places. I first used in in the early 80s.

My doper name is often used, but my email name never is, and, because of that, it’s the default name I use everywhere. The disadvantage is that it has no vowels and people find it hard to remember correctly.

So whose right mind are you in?

JOhn Malkovich’s?

I’m in my left mind.

I remember at one time there was an alansmithee or something like that here. I thought about complaining, but it seemed kind of petty, and I think he’d been here a while when I noticed him. He didn’t stick around, so it didn’t matter in the long run. But anything you think I’ve said in the past that offended you was definitely him!

On most other places I try to sign up as Alan Smithee, I find the name already taken. I use Rithmomachy as my backup name. I don’t think that’s ever been taken.

I have a friend in real life with the same first and last name(no relation.) Our mutual friends usually call me the Other Our Name since pretty much all of them knew him first and he’s older. Our name is common and there are tons of us.

I’m also the Doper formerly named Ataraxy. There’s another Doper named ataraxy22. I was the original.

EDIT: stupid homophone

I sometimes still feel guilty that I didn’t lurk long enough to know what a big poster Needs2know was back then before I chose my user name.

Knead
Woulda made an excellent Darth Volvo

People sometimes used to get me mixed up with Bippy the Beardless, who joined the SDMB just two weeks before I did. The Bipster has disappeared, though–he hasn’t posted in five years.

Way back in the AOHELL days, I had a fairly unique and memorable username that I used from email to any site that required a username. Had to drop it though when a friend of mine got stalked/hacked by some lowlife AOHELL chat scum.
Maybe half a doz came and went before I took up my current moniker. I like it, it suits me well.

and I don’t think I get confused with anyone else either!

Or diving in the tub. A.
