Any thoughts about what this might be? I don’t think it’s a bird. Maybe a ginormous moth? The flight pattern is so erratic. Please tell me it’s not a bat.

I was hoping it was a bat. It looks a whole lot more like bat food- that is to say, a moth.

I didn’t want a bat. I woke up in my house in the country one morning and there was a bat flying around the room. I had to get rabies shots just in case.

I’ve never seen one around a porch light though, just getting nectar from and pollinating certain flowers around dusk. They look at first glance like hummingbirds.
I’d be surprised if it was bigger than my pinky nail.
It wasn’t really around the lights though. It was just passing through.

I sometimes see moths like that during the day. They are called hummingbird moths out this way and I think they are way cool.

When I was a kid, I had a large insect collection. My largest moth had a wingspan of about five inches. There are actually moths with wingspans of over ten inches.
