Weirddave, kindly leave my RL name out of your posts

Lemme know if you want RT’s full name and work e-mail address, too. I’ve got both of 'em.

Now that I’ve said that, I feel compelled to reassure Rufus that I’m only kidding since he and I have had serious disagreements and personality conflicts in the past. I would never really do such a thing.

Humm - it does seem sort of obnoxious to start first-naming someone that you don’t actually get along with - it’s almost like Weirddave is trying to imply to other posters that there’s a relationship with RTFirefly that doesn’t exist - particularly as it was the first name used - it makes the post seem sort of folksy and condescending.

I think I would be annoyed too.

Pssst. Giles’ point went that way. I believe he’s saying that the mods should remove personal information posted by other posters at the request of the owner of said personal information. And, not to speak for them, I believe they will honor such a request, generally.

Oh, that would never happen, I’m sure of it.

Absolutely positive!

But RTFirefly didn’t offer up his real name, and this isn’t an “off the board” incident.

I know another doper’s real name, address, and phone number. That does not give me permission to post them. I read it on this board once: “Just because you CAN, it doesn’t mean that you SHOULD.”

If I posted someone else’s personal info that they didn’t themselves make public in a previous post or in their profile, it should be deleted on request to a Mod or Admin. This thread, for example, would not be a direct request IMO, if it was the only action taken. I’d have gone with the “report this post” button and tell them that I felt my privacy had been compromised, regardless of a “rule” or “custom”.

I understand, but what I’m saying is that an an off-board consequence of dopefests is that other dopers may learn your real name. The SDMB had no control over the situation in which the other doper learned your name, so why should they have any responsibility, or even inclination, to protect someone from how the other doper uses information they received off-board?

Had one of the mods, like Ukelele Ike for example, given RTFirefly’s info out, then I can see them taking responsibility. But from my PoV one of the things you agree to accept at your own risk, without the SDMB staff having your back, when you go to a dopefest is that other dopers now know things about you they wouldn’t know otherwise. The risk that one of them decides to use that knowledge in a manner you disagree with is your own.

Enjoy,
Steven

Sure, folks can easily learn personal information about another member through offboard contacts. A number of Dopers have my home address due to various mailings. If one of them should decide to come to my home and punch me in the nose, I’d have no expectation that the Staff would be inclined to do diddly-squat about it. That’s what the police are for. BUT, if one of them posted that address here, I sure as hell would expect the mods to remove it upon my request. They have zero control over events in my RL, but they do have control over events here.

Aww, geeze, you’re upset because I used your name? Not even your full name, but just your first name? Because that’ll allow your boss to identify you and make you get to work? That’s pretty lame. Whattza matter, couldn’t find anything else to feed your hard on for me today? Here’s a thought: Maybe you shouldn’t be posting from work, after all, our tax dollars are paying for you to sit on your ass and regurgitate all the crap you post. I know it’s a government job, so not much is expected of you, but I’d really feel better if you actually, you know, worked when we’re paying you to. Just a thought. As for using your name…it’s your goddamn name, excuse me for calling you by it.

Oh, it happened a while back when Mr. Firefly started following me around and making posts simply to attack me in threads he was not participating in. I noticed at the time and actually documented it, considering a pit thread of my own on the subject, but decided that would be a waste of time, I doubt I’ve still got the file with all the links in it anymore, and frankly, I don’t have the time or the inclination (I have to work) to dig around year old threads to recreate it. I’m not hostile to Mr. Firefly, I find him amusing most of the time, in the same way a pissed off 4 year old is amusing, but I just decided that from then on I would reply in kind to him and I suspect he’s pissed because I’m better at it than he is. Just another example of someone calling the tune and then whining when they can’t handle the dance.

Seeing as how your profile lists your e-mail, I’d say that if he had the inclination to flood your e-mail, he or anyone else already has the ability now.

Yawn…

Because it’s against board policy to bring off-board disputes onto the board. Wierddave and RTFirefly’s enmitiy may have started here, but developments in their feud that happen in real life should stay in real life.

If you have a problem with privacy concerns, emailing one of us would be a better way to handle it. Certainly a quieter way to handle it, and isn’t that the point?
