So last night I’m talking with the parents, as per usual for a Sunday, and my dad brings up something I’d forgotten. About ten years ago, we made a trip to the old family ranch in Texas to sell off some of the land, as one of the partners wanted to liquidate some of it. We wound up selling about sixty percent of the land, and one thing I remember telling my dad is that we should see about the mineral rights, because hey, anything could happen, right? Keep in mind this is Lubbock, Texas, not far from some pretty good oil fields. He shrugged it off, but since there were workable mineral deposits, we wound up reserving fifty percent of the mineral rights as a condition of the sale.
He then tells me that an exploration company has bought the rights and will start drilling next month. They have it on decent authority that we could have ten producing wells by the end of next year, and while I’m taking it with a grain of salt, it’s still pretty cool.
Anybody else get a surprise lately?
