i am late to work today, which will most likely result in me being fired. my husband and i are done. i had to give away my dog. i have no further job prospects in my field, although i’ve been looking for months (this job sucks, 12 hour shifts, about impossible with 2 rugrats). so, i guess my engineering degree was for naught, as i will soon be waiting tables or working in construction. or disability, i am a bit crazy.
can you get unemployment if you get fired?
i saw my x for the first time last night in at least 2 weeks. probably should have left, but you know, you get lonely sometimes. i think i got him agreeable to sign the divorce papers.
so, i guess i have to sell the house now. damn shame, as i recently refinanced all the equity out of it.
anyone looking for an industrial engineer? location not a problem.
on the brighter side, nowhere to go from here but up?
IANAL, but you can sometimes get unemployment if you get fired. The laws vary by state, so I’m not even going to attempt to give any advice as to what conditions you would need to qualify under, but I will say this: if you get fired, and intend to file for unemployment compensation, do it as soon as you get fired. Very generally speaking, if you’re approved for unemployment, your benefits probably won’t cover any period before you file. So if you wait 3 weeks, file, and get approved, chances are you won’t get paid for those first 3 weeks.
Second, try to keep in mind that you haven’t been fired yet.
Third, I hope you have a lawyer helping you with your divorce. I didn’t, because I didn’t see that we had anything to quibble over, we worked everything out on their own. I regret that decision now, because every choice I made was based on my emotional state.
Fourth, if you have kids, and will have custody of them, and have no job when all the relevant papers are filed, this will affect (probably in your favor) how much child support you get from him. There are also plenty of state programs designed to help a single mother. I’d call a local agency - you can find out which by calling Town Hall, I’d think - and see what you’re options are.
Believe me, I have been there. Take a deep breath, try to get some perspective on your situation, and talk with people who can see your situation without the fog of pain, sadness, and fear.
thank you. with unemployment and child support, i may be able to put off selling the house for a month or so.
so now i am sitting here waiting for my boss to show up so i can be fired. wheeeee. i don’t even know why i bother showing up. some kind of work ethic or something.
so how about you? if you knew you were certain to be fired, would you show up to cover your shift? just for reference, i work 12 hour shifts, the guy i am replaceing cannot leave until i get here, or he must call in the on-call, which can take an hour or two.
i f*king hate this job. hate, hate, hate. this will hopefully be a blessing in disguise. send me good luck for a new job vibes. why, in the name of Og, were 12 hour shifts even invented? who can do that and lead a normal life? not to mention the borderline personality disorder that i have been recently diagnosed with. no wonder i can’t function. could you?
I got fired once, and had no problem collecting unemployment. Apply the next day…the process takes a few weeks, so you won’t be getting a check for a month or so, and in Ohio it is only for 50% of your pay. Good luck. My firing came during the time of my divorce recovery, which wasn’t as bad as if it had happened during the divorce itself. But like you and your equity loan, I’d taken a loan from my profit-sharing account, and ended up losing all of it because I had to use the balance to pay back the loan immediately. I didn’t have much, but it was all I had.
3 hours late. it’s not just that i was late, it’s that i was late, and someone else had to cover my shift, and i had already been warned because recantly i was working in the back office and not shown up at all, cause soon to be ex had taken off with my keys and phone, so not only could i not drive to work, but i couldn’t even call and tell them that.
boss is here now, wonder how long it will take. i’m ready to go now.
gah. this is killing me. i am so ready to leave. boss is here, and not saying a word yet. i think he is waiting until boss boss shows up, in about an hour. this is horrible. i hate the anticipation.
If your “atl” location is Atlanta, you’re going to have trouble collecting unemployment. To qualify in Georgia, you must be out of work “through no fault of your own.” From the Georgia unemployment FAQ:
I would venture a guess that repeatedly showing up late, or not at all, would be “failure to follow rules.”
then disablitly it is. doc’s been threatening me for months with this. apparently my mental conditions don’t mesh well with 12 hour rotating shifts. never planned on keeping this job more than two years, and it’s been twice that now.
boss boss is here now, and still nothing has been said to me. i hate this. just do it already, we all know what is coming, and there is a second worker here to cover me. do it. damnit. fire me before it’s too late to make it to the doc. i can’t stand this. maybe i should just say something…
If they fire you, it will probably be at the end of your shift. That way, they get all they can out of you and avoid the emotional turmoil that would result among your fellow employees.
great. with the way things have been going, they will wait until i pull next weekend’s shifts too. that would be the 3rd of 5 weekends in a row i am scheduled to work.
i can’t believe i am actually looking forward to getting fired.
If you get fired, apply for it anyway. If it works like Wisconsin, you’ll get a telephone interview from a case worker, who will then notify your former employer of the claim and give him the chance to respond. If he doesn’t respond or responds favorably then you’ll get benefits. Let the people who do this stuff for a living make the determination.
