This is not a phone call I expected to get today: “I have a veteran’s peddler license, what do I have to do to operate in your township?”

“Huh?” Mouth hangs gaping open, drool pools on the desktop.

Now what am I going to do? I can find no mention of anything close to that in the ordinance; but I’m told that every legal use must be allowable somewhere in a zoned governmental area. Time to email the attorney…

Veteran’s Peddler License.

Every honorably discharged member of the United States Armed Forces and their spouses are eligible to apply for a Veteran’s Peddler License. This license provides veterans with the right to hawk, peddle, vend, and sell goods, wares or merchandise or solicit trade upon the streets and highways within Nassau County.

This is Nassau County, NY, but I imagine this applies anywhere.

Every honorably discharged member of the armed forces of the United States who served at least 180 days of active duty or has a service-connected disability and is a resident of Michigan has the right to sell his own goods within Michigan if the proceeds from the sale of the goods are to be used for the direct personal benefit or gain of the veteran, by procuring a license for that purpose issued under the act, which is valid for one year.
