Well, this was too good to last

It’s official. My '88 Honda Civic hatchback, with *309,000 miles on it is dead. In the words of the mechanic, “Something’s broke inside the motor.”

*I’ve compared the registered miles with Insterstate mile markers a number of times, and my odometer consistently clicks off about 104 miles for every 100 Interstate miles, so the “real” mileage might be closer to 297,000.

Your mechanic really sounds like he knows what he’s talking about, so I guess you’re right. There is no hope.

it isn’t until the mechanic puts their arm around you and says “let’s talk” before you know you’ll have to sell a kidney to keep in running.

Helluva run, there, Mjollner.

I once bought a yellow Buick Century for 300 bucks. Expecting very little, it got me around for two years, including weekly two-hour drives from college back home to work on weekends.

Those are the ones you always remember …

If the rest of your car is like your over-reading odometer, you might want to consider that it is not a 1988 Civic, but actually a 1912 Civic.

Sounds like it lasted a damn good while.

My girl, a 88 pontiac grand am is on 204,000 and chuggin’ It will indeed be a sad day when she dies…

Well, it’s good to know that cars are still lasting that long. My 1973 Cadillac Eldorado died about five years ago with 360,000 miles on the odometer. I miss it. snif

My motto has always been, “If it still runs, it’s fine.” But then, my baby died Memorial Day weekend as pieces of engine - the water pump and several wheels from the serpentine belt system - started falling off as I was driving down the expressway.

I’m sorry for your loss, Mjollnir; it’s hard to say goodbye to a good car.
