Well...

Oh, Scylla, assuming you use Windows (as I don’t know that this is the case for Macs):

Ctrl-F “Scylla” (minus the quoteation marks) should tell you if your name is on the page in question or not. If you get no hits, so to speak, go on to the next page. Saves a lot of reading.

DDG,
Count me as one of the people who appreciates what you do. Keep on googling.

Diogenes

That pretty much sums it up as far as I’m concerned, Duck Duck Goose. A few more points:[ul][li]I didn’t post my suggestions as a moderator, because I didn’t want to attach the associated weight to my arguments. You already had dozens of people arguing for or against you - certainly an Official Moderator statement would not have made you feel any better. []I could have send you an e-mail, as you stated. However, in this case, I agreed with the OP to an extent, and saw enough likewise responses to justify a post on my own behalf.[]In my posts in that long, long thread, I’ve tried to make it perfectly clear that my criticism was meant constructively, and not a slam. So far, you seem unable to grasp that notion, taking me to task by asking for more cites and refusing to believe my posts do not reflect just my opinion, but the opinion of more staff members.[/ul]That’s where we stand now. I’m utterly amazed at the length of this OP - obviously this matter affects you greatly. Perhaps it affects you more than would be good for you, but that may be just me. What can you expect from me, in response to all this?[ul][]No more cites will be forthcoming. Frankly, it’s just too much damn work. Scanning a years worth of your posts isn’t done in a couple of minutes. Furthermore, I wasn’t debating anything, I was partially agreeing with the OP in that you DO come off as a “Junior mod wannabee” (a term I just borrowed from the other thread because it seemed to fit) at times. I was giving you my impression. As always in life, c’est le ton qui fait la musique: if ten people tell you you come across as a busybody, the very least you could do is think about how you express yourself. Not everything is quantifiable, and not everything should be: I don’t go asking for cites when someone says “hey, you come across as a bit of jackass at times”. I pause, and think why that person would say that. []You still seem to think my posts in the previous thread reflect my opinion alone. There have been a few responses from my colleagues in both the closed pit thread and the resulting ATMB-thread about “Junior modding” that seem to contradict that. Maybe this disappoints you, but I don’t think we’re going to have every member of staff chiming in posting “Yeah, I agree with what Coldfire said”. Why? Because it’s cost enough time already. Because the point is obvious, from the posts of the members of staff who did already share their thoughts on the matter.[/ul]You seemed to have taken my advice of taking a break for a couple of days, only to then read my advice (and no doubt the rest of the thread) again. So far, it seems that you still can’t see it for the constructive criticism it was. And that’s sad.[/li]
FWIW, I read your Hippie House analogy, and all I was thinking was “she just hangs out there, doesn’t really join the debates, and appoints herself Head Coffee and Cup Honcho”. I see how the owners of the place could be annoyed by something you perceive as help, but they perceive as an intrusion on their own privileges and duties within the house. There is such a thing as trying to be too helpful, and quite frankly, I do think you occasionally cross that line here.

Don’t ask me for cites. Read, think, reflect. Learn.

Duck Duck,

I stayed out of the original train wreck, even though I noted you fingered me as a fellow Googler. Guilty, as charged; and I’m not about to change. Part of what continues to bring me here is the thought, “Well, what am I going to tackle tonight?” I enjoy you, and look forward to your future contributions to the board.

For criticism, I’ll hitchhike on Billdo and samclem. I’ve been guilty in the past, when the board was smaller - stay out of the mod business. That’s not to say we can’t keep 'em thinking, but know where the yellowstripe is.

It would be pointless now to speculate or attempt commentary on why jar chose the path she did. Nevertheless, you are an integral part of my experience here, and I want to see you around.

On Preview, I’d say read Coldie’s last post, as well.

But please, stick around.

The only reason I’m posting here is because DDG actually mentioned my name in her OP here. The other thread was just too much to take.

I read jarbaby’s thread. It was horrifying. The level of venom that got spewed in there was unreal.

My personal opinion? You both had valid points. While I saw no real reason for your second reply to jarbaby (your first post, the one where you said “bite me,” would have done just fine, with perhaps some less-venomous backup later.

I’ve seen a lot of your Google stuff, DDG. Most of it is quite helpful. Some of it is absolute art, and has left me breathless and insane with jealously that I don’t have that skill. Then there’s the few that aren’t. Well, we all make mistakes. We’re human. But the vast majority of your answers tend towards doing much more help than harm. So, link away! But yeah, maybe go back & check on them from time to time.

The “junior mod” thing? I’ve seen that too. But like the Googling, sometimes it’s helpful, sometimes it isn’t. It certainly doesn’t suck that there’s people like you that feel so strongly about this place that you just want to help in any way you can (and believe me when I say I feel that strongly as well–I’m just not as verbal, and I don’t have internet access at work. Otherwise, I may well be doing much the same thing  ). But the thing is, we’ve got rather a lot of moderators now (although one or two more might not be a bad thing), and they do their jobs very, very well. They cover each other’s backs. There’s no doubt that they DO appreciate an assist from us (they work very hard, but they can’t be everywhere), there does come a point when…well, yeah, it can get to be a bit too much. It’s okay to do it–you just might think about doing it less often.

I myself have always enjoyed reading posts by you and jarbaby both. You’ve both been favorites of mine for a long time, and I someday hope to meet you both at a fest somewhere. And I also fervently hope that you’ll get this issue settled. Like many, many other posters have stated, it made me very sad to see two people I admire so much having such an ugly encounter.

Much love,
Cristi

…and the side I’m on, if we have to pick up teams is Duck Duck Goose’s.

I found her OP in this thread moving and vivid.

I have stayed away from these boards for months now, stunned by a vicious, gleeful attack from a poster I had always respected, and what I copped was only a fraction of what’s been thrown at DDG, including phlegm-coloured vomittings from the worst bottom-feeder in this joint.

But I also found that long OP contributed strong useful insights.

This Board has its origin and point of existence in that motto about Fighting Ignorance.

I scarcely ever have more to contribute than personal reflections and jokes, but I know that the general aim of all we do here is to seek some truth, and add in a small way to the world’s wisdom. Even if it’s only to stop high school girls from repeating gossipy nonsense about Jamie Lee Curtis. Encouraging folk to think about what they say.

That’s the side DDG is on, and apart from the small conflicts life inevitably holds, that side is moving in a direction. Like, towards the light.

The rest move around and around and pal up and fall out and swap pointless observations and the names change but the cast, as she has observed, stays the same and doesn’t get anywhere. Fun for a while.

This is good coffee by the way. What blend is it?

Have you had that Jamaican Blue Mountain stuff? Is it as good as they say?

And why do the espresso blend beans have that shiny appearance? Do they add an oil or something?

And do the beans that are darker make a stronger tasting coffee?

Mmmmm… coffee…

Here’s my hand.

your frend,

Redboss

A penny or two…

I’ve always been very impressed at your ability to dig up scads of arcane info. I actually have a pretty funny mental picture of you that I wont’ go into now, but it’s all good.

Second, the whole coffee thing and related issues…well, it’s a “screw you, Ms. Goody Two Shoes, you ain’t better just because you are doing more than me!” Insecurity. You are, innocently, making people feel small by being better than they are, in whatever way. Common thing, pay it no mind.

Finally, you are SO FUCKING RIGHT about the “reading into” stuff! Oh my god… I’ve never seen such drama queen crap as we get around here over things that could be and should be treated as perfectly innocent remarks. I’ve been astonished by the gymnastics people will go through to make sure they can take offense.

And that’s everything I found in my pocket after reading your OP.

**“Too much work” to find cites to support your position? Oh, well. << sigh >>

Anyway, thank you for indirectly proving my point that my “junior modding” has not been an ongoing problem, and that it has not attracted the attention of the mods in general. If it had, you would have remembered the offending threads, if not had them actually bookmarked somewhere (in case my “junior modding” ever escalated into something that would require an Official Warning), and you’d have been able to find them.

You are hereby reprieved from having to go sit in the front pew with the other Wild Exaggerators, because Gigobuster just gave me a hug and that’s put me in a real mellow mood this morning.

Please, help yourself to a pickle juice lollipop and a Chick tract on your way out, there seem to be quite a few left. Whatsa matta, you people don’t appreciate Littrachoor?

I think we’re done here, somebody can lock this thread.

Wow.

Lots of heartfelt posts directly addressed to you, Duck. You have one post in this thread after your initial three, and it is a request to lock the thread. I don’t normally post after such requests, but this circumstance is exceptional.

You waited until you got your response from Coldie, and then you posted and wanted the thread closed. What about what I said to you? Was it “too much work” to respond?

Why didn’t you just title this thread: “Dear Coldfire: all others please ignore”?

Duck, I don’t think that there is any proof here. It seems to me that “Junior Modding” is not something that is an really an official rules violation, but rather a minor annoyance.

I have a real-life friend who can sometimes be somewhat annoying. Whenever I bring up something to her that I find irritating (usually after having had mutual friends mention to me that they find it irritating as well), my friend demands that I prove to her instances of the annoying behavior. Whenever I list occurances, she will describe the circumstances that made her behavior perfectly reasonable. No matter how many examples I come up with, she always has an explanation. What she seems to miss is that it is not that any particular time she does whatever is annoying me (and our friends) is not a problem, but rather the repetition becomes irritating.

The moderators have suggested that you tone down the “Junior Modding.” As Lynn confirmed, it’s not just Coldfire but a consensus of the staff. The fact that there is no one particular egregious example that the staff can point to doesn’t make a low-level repetitive irritation any less annoying.

Again, I would try to change your tone when posting about board-related topics and see how it goes.

I dunno. This thread and the other only really taught me two things, both of which I already knew, on a few levels…

a) some people take some Board stuff waaaaaaaaay too seriously

b) A person can reach the age of 47 and still act like a 15-year-old D&D Rules Lawyer.

Now that’s depressing.

Lib is right.

A lot of the same criticisms from the other thread were voiced again here, couched in better terms, by friends of the OP. A lot of support was shown for you, DDG. These people want you to become a better person.

But you’re acting like that really doesn’t matter. If all you wanted was to be vindicated, wouldn’t the show of force from your supporters be enough? Why the tunnel-vision for Coldie? You’re coming off as incredibly petulant.
To all the ‘this place isn’t real - you take this too seriously people’ - this place is just as real as letter from home to a GI. It’s just as real as a phone call from Mom. It’s just as real as a memo around the office. Someone somewhere created these words. If you don’t believe that, then maybe you’re better off just playing videogames. There the personalities are digital.

That being said, some people like it here because they can do and say things they can’t in day-to-day life. They can be more than what they are, or be judged solely on intellect and not appearrance.
No one wants a reminder of the ‘real’ world in the form of a school principal type. This is why your behaviour comes off as annoying, DDG.

I’m with you, Lib. Wow. I’m more surprised at this DDG post than I was at her second post in Jarbaby’s thread. Among others, I certainly expected a response to your post. I’m gonna go ahead (for the first time, I think) and retract what I said eariler here. She just sailed past deeply affected and straight into looney land. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Amazing.

Geeez, louise, you people are touchy.

Lib, your contribution to this thread was to slam me for “driving you away”. I’m supposed to thank you for that?

If you weren’t holding a grudge, why bring it up at all?

Okay, then:

Look, people, I’m truly sorry —> :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: <---- that I was so wrapped up in waiting for responses from Jarbaby and Coldfire that it seemed like I “just walked right past” all of you. I honestly didn’t mean to do that, I just wanted to get the frickin’ thread OFF the forum and out of my life, and not incidentally stop giving posting opportunities to the “DDG Sucks” brigade.

I do especially appreciate Minty and Wring and all the other people who posted nice supportive things about me in this thread and in the other one. You guys are the only reason that I’m still here, period.

Thank you, all, from the bottom of my heart. Really.

Well thats wrapped up in a nice tidy package.

Lets move on.

[…stunned silence… …moving along…]

What are you stunned about, Lib? I’d like to know.

I always thought that if I ever had to pit Duck Duck Goose, a good thread title would be “Hey, Duck Duck Goose! Fuck Fuck You!” I’m just saying this because I’ll probably never have a good reason to call DDG out, and it would’ve been a shame not to share the hysterical funniness of that thread title with all of you.

I’m stunned that a person who explodes upon being criticized thinks that others are touchy. I’m stunned that my attempt to facilitate healing was interpreted as a slam. I’m stunned at being presumed a liar when I said I held no grudge. I’m just generally stunned at being so insignificant that the depression I described is of no concern to someone who spent possibly hours pouring out their emotions to express how they’d been hurt. I’m just plain stunned.
