Welp, the aliens are finally attacking

@LSLGuy

I drove a Falcon when I was in high school. And I’m laughing my fool head off at the idea of putting Elon Musk in one!

I’ve seen that footage, from the football game. A young woman’s car was totaled by a large chunk of that meteorite, and even if her insurance hadn’t paid, which it did, a museum paid her more than enough for that meteorite to replace that car.

I remember watching a show about UFOs when I was a tween in the late 1970s, and as they showed this, with a voiceover about weather balloons, my dad said, “That’s not a weather balloon.” And he was right; it was an asteroid that probably crossed through the atmosphere at about 40 miles up, and would have taken out a city if it had landed.

Nah, it was around the same size as Chelyabinsk from 10.02 years ago. It would have shattered miles up, scattered at most a few hundred pounds of rocks over a number of square miles, possibly rattled some windows.

Do you mean the same size as the Chelyabinsk meteor, or the same size as the city of Chelyabinsk itself? :wink:

Have you seen the NOVA episode about Chelyabinsk? It said that had that asteroid entered the atmosphere at an angle just a few degrees steeper, it would indeed have taken out the city a la Tunguska. Most of the energy burned off during those few seconds when people caught it on their dashcams.

Hard to believe it’s been 10 years since that happened!

Now they are going after hospitals!

(BTW, there’s no “maybe” about that one. Unambiguously the real thing.)
