We're getting a Makerbot!

I’ve been wanting to get a Makerbot or similar 3D printer for years, but never been able to justify the cost. Now the company I work for is getting one, and putting me in charge of setting it up and running it.

The company I work for has frequent need of small one-of-a-kind fixtures to support assembly and testing of electronics. We also have recently needed to replace some no-longer-available parts on some of our production equipment. Over the last few years we’ve placed many orders to commercial rapid prototyping services. After the latest emergency need-it-now 3D part order, they decided to order a Makerbot. We should get it in February. And then it will be my job to set it up, calibrate and upgrade it, and design parts to be printed with it.

Not quite as awesome as getting my own for home use, but I’m still pretty excited.

Cooool!

Any job openings?

I, for one, want to see a pic of the very first thing you print with it.

Sunspace: I know! Sorry, no job openings at the moment.

Snowboarder Bo: The first thing I print on it will probably be the calibration cube, to test if I have the axis aligned and belts tensioned properly. Then, I’ll probably be printing upgrade parts for the printer itself for a bit Oh yeah, I’ll take pictures.

Aye but the calibration cube isn’t what you print, it’s just part of the instructions. I mean the first thing that gets printed because you or your company wants printed.

Plus of course, anything cool you figure out you can make!

/me filled with envy

I got to stand next to an Epilog 75W laser cutter doing its thing the other night. Totally badass. Ah the toys I would have were I rich!
