We're going to Austin tomorrow!

My present for my husband’s birthday tomorrow is an overnight trip to Austin. We’re staying at the downtown Omni.

All suggestions for food and music are greatly appreciated. We are ignorant!

We prefer low-key places as opposed to “upscale.” We’re aging hippie, ex-dope-smoking, biker types. Classic rock as opposed to screaming metal. Some country is good, too.

We’re parking the truck and walking everywhere. I’ve heard there are little bicycle cart guys that will haul you around, too.

Tell me what not to miss! We’ll be there around noon Saturday until around 3 or 4 on Sunday.

That hotel is in a great freakin’ location. Just walk up and down 6th street and 4th street and you’ll find tons of bars/clubs. I’d almost guarantee you’ll find something to be happy with. Check out Austin 360 for more specific things.

Pick up a Chronicle for event listings, restaurants reviews and shows.

Or visit them online: http://www.austinchronicle.com/

For restaurants:

Tex-Mex: La Margarita, up in Round Rock. Very cheap, and they’ve got the best fajitas I’ve ever tasted.

Sushi: Hakado Sushi, in Pflugerville. Tell Chris I said “hi”.

Korean: Korea House, in the Village Center. Their bul-go-ki rocks, and I’m very partial to their yuk-hoi-bi-bim-bab.

Vietnamese: Kim Phung on North Lamar, right at 183. Insanely cheap, insanely large portions, insanely good. Seriously, you won’t believe how cheap they are.

Barbecue: both are a bit far, but Mueller’s (in Taylor) is the best meat I’ve found, and Salt Lick (south of Austin) is just all-around fantastic.

Austin food: The Shady Grove, on Barton. If you want the quintessential Austin hippie hang-out, this is it. Good food, but the atmosphere is what you’d want to go there for. Chuys is also good, as is Hula Hut. Coincidentally, they’re all owned by the same people.

Ester’s Follies!

I stayed there when my cousin graduated from UT last year. It’s a pretty sweet place, and a really good location. A buddy of mine from Austin picked me up and we hit 6th street together. Be sure to make time to visit with Leslie.

Ok, I’ll bite. Who’s Leslie?

You’re a couple of blocks from Esther’s Follies, a great skit-comedy show. Call ahead for tickets.

A couple of blocks in the other direction is Jaime’s Spanish Village. They have pretty good Tex-Mex and sangria.

The Dog and Duck Pub is maybe a mile from your hotel and is a good pub for hanging out at. They’re having their 15th Anniversary Party this weekend.

Sixth Street has all sorts of clubs. Just walk up and down it until you find something you like.

If you’re on Sixth Street anyway, checkout Forbidden Fruit for that special birthday gift.

If you’re not doing anything when the sun sets (7:45), wander down to Congress Avenue Bridge. What’s to see? How about a million bats

Mexican food in Austin? Matt’s El Rancho on South Lamar. Try the Bob Armstrong dip. Nummy.

Yup
