The Lego Movie was released in February. But it’s still in theatres this week. As far as I’m concerned if a movie is playing in theatres in July, you can call it a summer movie.
I can’t objectively answer the question in the Subject Line because while I like it when their numbers agree with me, neither Box Office Mojo nor Rotten Tomatos has any bearing on what I see or what I like. I generally don’t look at either site before I see a movie and only sometimes, out of curiosity, after.
I’ve seen 161 movies in the theater so far this year (58 in March alone, most of them at the European Union Film Festival, because I’m one of those film snobs, don’tcha know), and on the whole it’s been a fantastic year and summer so far for me. I haven’t liked everything I saw but since I don’t even go to see movies I think I’ll hate, I do at least like the majority.
With so many movies coming up that I can’t wait to see, I don’t see my already thinking it’s been a great year for movies changing. For me anyway, since I don’t care about any other criteria.
It has been a rather underwhelming summer, I’d agree. Standouts for me were The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Lego Movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and X-Men: Days of Future Passed. Very different, but each fun and well-done in its own way.
