My wife took on a new role at her firm that will be based in Bangalore, so we’re moving there! Of course, I have no idea when, given the current global weirdness, but that’s the plan. I’m actually really excited. We’ve made numerous trips there in the past, and we have a number of friends there (probably more than we have here in Miami). We will likely be tin Bangalore for 3-4 years, which will take my wife to her mandatory retirement date. Her firm has a pretty good relocation office, so while there will be a lot of moving parts to this, I feel like we’ve got some good resources at our disposal. The firm will fly us back home twice a year, and I suspect I’ll be back more often than that.
We’re both in our mid-50s, and while we’ve never lived overseas before, we’re both kind of adventurous in this way. “Why not,” was what we both said. Our girls are grown and out on their own, it’s a great opportunity for my wife, we’ll have a chance to experience a completely new place, and we’ll for sure have some tales to tell.
We’re both SCUBA divers, so one of the things I’m looking forward to is being so much closer to great Asian diving. Maldives, Thailand, Andaman Islands…all kinds of places I’ve wanted to go but we didn’t have the time to travel to.
I’ll be the non-working spouse (although, I prefer the title, “Chief of Staff” :D) so I’ll handle all of the day-to-day stuff. When I’m not doing that job, I plan to take some cooking lessons, some Kannada classes, and start doing whatever e-learning and training I can do to get my Divemaster certification, and eventually my instructor cert.
So, I am certain I will have many more posts in IMHO looking for advice as to how to move and live overseas (and keep our house here), but for now I’m just super-stoked to be starting this new phase of our lives for a few years. I just wish I could get moving on everything right now.
