It didn’t pay off in the long run for Spain, either. They pulled so much gold out of the Americas that the value plummeted, and it ended up wrecking their whole economy.
Added to this was that it removed incentive to develop industrial activities - just go out and steal wealth and slaves - leading to lack of innovation.
