The fans wouldn’t have bought the Dixie Chicks albums in the first place if they knew about these views.
Would you keep the Screwdriver CD if you found out about the views of the band after unknowingly buying it?
You made no such dinstinctions until now. Remember, you were the one who said:
You routinely seem to make statements that you are either unwilling or unable to back up. When challenged, you quietly attempt to back away from them without actually retracting.
You need to try harder. I haven’t notice such a distinction. You said flat out that “their fans are retarded.”
Nor should they. They are fans of Bush more than they are fans of the Dixie Chicks it would seem. What’s wrong with that?
Hey, there: If the term “white trash” isn’t racist of offensive in any way why have you discontinued it’s use? Why the change to now simply saying “trash”?
Where does the OP mention troops? You brought this into it, not anyone else.
I understand. We shouldn’t remove Saddam from power because he doesn’t have any Weapons of Mass Destruction.
We also shouldn’t remove Saddam from power because if we do he will use his Weapons of Mass Destruction on our troops.
Therefore, as far as you are concerned, liberal celebrities should have “freedom of speech”, but ordinary individuals should not be permitted freedom to not buy or advertise that celebrity’s product if they disagree with said celebrity. So, should refusal to buy or play a Dixie Chicks’ record be a misdemeanor or a felony? Should it be punished with a fine or a “re-education camp”?
I think it’s bogus to compare the DC’s with Skrewdriver, but I have bought CD’s by bands that I later found out disagreed with me politically, and still found it possible to enjoy the music.
If I found myself in possession of a Skrewdriver CD, I’d sell it.
Kiddie porn is illegal. It is not protected free speech, so there is no hypocrisy in destroying it. I still wouldn’t feel the need to make a big, drunken spectacle out of it, though.
See above
I said this back on page one:
Why does it have to be one or the other? Why do they think that any artist they like is required to agree with them politically? If they liked the music yesterday, then they should like it today. Their inability to process political dissent makes them look stupid and backwards. They have the right be stupid and backwards but I also have the right to mock them for it.
The “white” part is sort of incidental, but part of the reason I use it is because it denotes a mentality of white bigotry which still exists in the south. If it makes you feel better I’ll just call them “trash.”
As I said, the people in the OP were fallaciously appealing to the “troops” to justify their own intolerance.
We shouldn’t invade because it’s illegal. Whether Iraq has WMD’s is the UN’s problem, not George W’s. It has definitely been shown that iraq has no ability, whatever, to harm the US, so the US has no credible argument either of self-defense or that iraq poses an imminent threat to the US. Since those are the only legal justifications for an invasion, we have no right to do it.
Furthermore, if Saddam still does have anything left, he’s most definitely going to use it on American troops, or on Israel or both. The only way to get Americans hurt is to invade. We don’t have to do it. Nothing will happen to the US if we don’t. I think it is irresponsible for Bush to expose the troops to any potential danger if he doesn’t have to do it, and he doesn’t have to do it.
Realisticly? Damn wrong. Real wrong. See, there is a difference between saying something like “As a woman I deplore war in general, as I hate the idea of our children going off & dying”. Her fan base, and Americans in general (can’t speak for Texans)- could have bought that. In fact, it could have brought the DC’s more support. But saying she was ashamed of the prez- no, that was just plain stupidly wrong.
The Dixie Chicks have a history of speaking their minds and dancing to their own tune. The other week their album “Home” was up for a Grammy for Album of the Year against Springsteen and Nora Jones. To limit their fan-base to “conservative country America” is ludicrous.
I have no doubt that most of their money does indeed come from “conservative country America”, but that has more to do with social conditioning than anything else.
If a song consists of traditional bluegrass instruments played with traditional bluegrass technique, the country market will inevitably provide the environment for the band to grow (or fail),…after all, they are the folks who will slap down their money to hear some good fiddle… but Country is by no means the only potential market for a band, and the Dixie Chicks are already a prime example of that.
Just because lyrics are sung above the twang of a steel guitar does not mean that those lyrics are limited to conservative dogma, or that the musicians are so limited.
To condemn an artist for speaking in opposition to their fans’ popular opinion is a crock…you can disagree with her, that’s fine…but have a valid reason.
The Chicks don’t appear to have many conformist bones in their (damn cute) bodies, and for that I am thankfull.
I have this very funny mental image of a bunch of rednecks being caught with their pants down “thinking outside of the box”. Conflict and turmoil have a tendancy to force people to put their money where their mouth is. The boycotting DJ’s and CD destroyers are just pulling their pants back up and scrambling back into the box as fast as they can. I’m fairly certain that The Dixie Chicks will continue to find plenty of listeners who prefer to run around the box naked.
Come to think of it…their US “Home” tour sold out in a record 20 minutes earlier this month…I was quite sad…so if anyone out there is planning on ripping up their tickets in patriotic unity, I’ll be ready with the scotch tape.
Fair enough, forgive and forget, I’ve got some trashy kinfolk I’d rather forget about too. They just happen to be white. Next time you want to go on a rant like this one…try a pit thread. Just remember to add a smiley once in awhile so people won’t crucify your ass.
The way your posts read, you come off like one of the assholes you are bitching about. Reread them and think about it, maybe put their shoes on while doing so.
<sorry about the hijack folks, just wanted to keep it in GD and not the pit, which is probably where it needs to go now…damned coon-asses, whatcha gonna do >
BTW a liberal show whose actors stand against GW…how about Martin Sheen and “The West Wing”. But, it won’t keep me from watching the show.
and the D/C were speaking for Texans or it appeared that way to me…if that was the case then it was wrong. (If NOT my mistake)
Here’s to PEACE in the Middle East…<downs a shot of Cuervo>
You’re right, t-keela, I should have ranted in the pit, not here.
I’ve never seen The West Wing but I’ll take your word for it that it’s liberal. I guess I was thinking more about talk radio when I said that stuff about liberal shows, even though nobody actually specified that.
Do you still have Jim Hightower on the radio down there in Texas. He’s a good 'ol boy liberal.
I though the DC’s were just speaking for themselves, but they should have known they were going to piss off a whole bunch of people down there. I just wish people didn’t take that stuff so seriously. If a girl can play a fiddle, then she can play a fiddle. People should be able to just enjoy the fiddle playing and ignore a liberal comment here and there.
“If a girl can play a fiddle, then she can play a fiddle. People should be able to just enjoy the fiddle playing and ignore a liberal comment here and there.”
true enough…SHOULD being the uncontrolled variable, reminds me of Kekes.
Jim Hightower, I thought he was dead. I don’t generally listen to radicals from either the right or the left. I know there out there and keep up with 'em a little. But, I’m not wasting my time on them.
I guess I’m kinda Buddhist in that way, generally speaking somewhere in the middle is usually best. Damned, I hate walking a fence though.
I had a chat with my wife this morning about the Dixie Chicks. She’s a big fan of country music, and I can’t stand it. She was well aware of the situation, and the remark. She listens to country while I’m at work and when I get home we switch to something else because I REALLY can’t stand it. Anyway, she told me that two of the major country stations for the D/FW area, 96.3 KSCS and 99.5 KPLX, have decided to stop playing Dixie Chicks songs in response to the statement. I didn’t find a page on their web site that stated this(although I admit to not looking very hard) but here is the page on KSCS.com about the issue. It seems they’ve had a poll of thier listners to see if they agree or disagree with what the Dixie Chicks said. As of now they’ve had over 14,000 responses(93% disagree with the statement) and they’ve posted quite a few responses. Many of the ones I saw acknowledged that the DC’s were within their rights and were supportive of free speech, but that they disagreed with what was said and wanted the Chicks to know that they would switch off any station they heard playing a DC song until a more convincing apology was offered.
Personally, I don’t think that’s going far enough. I’m going to switch off ANY station playing a DC song EVER. And I’m NOT going to buy ANY of their CDs.
Damn it! Now that I poke a bit further it seems the stories about stations boycotting, or album sales falling, etc seem overblown. DAMN IT! Is there no justice? These bitches should PAY!
[sub]What? You mean I’m not allowed to demand that prominent figures be toppled because of some minor issue that I’ve taken as a personal affront? You think I’m a loon? It’s irrational to stoke the fires of public outrage over this statement in order to see them taken down a peg just to fulfil my ulterior motive of wanting to take them down for personal reasons? Well then SCREW YOU! I’m from TEXAS DAMNIT! If I want the bitches to go down I’ll lie, spin, and outright fabricate stuff to sway public opinion against them. It’s not a question of right or wrong, they are clearly wrong. It’s a question of resolve. If the radio stations don’t have the resolve to live up to their responsibility then I will rise to mine. In a year, in five years, the Dixie Chicks would have time to ruin lots of classic rock songs. They must be stopped NOW. I’ll give them 48 hours to retire from the music business, or there will be dire consequences.[/sub]
[Slight Hijack]
I just wish that the energy and backlash, in the light of the statement made by Natalie Maines, was also devoted to any release of a cop-hating, gay-bashing song from Eminem.
OK, which is it? “If you like their art (music in this case), their political statements should be ignored” or as Martin Sheen would have it “As popular artists, we have a soapbox and we’re going to use it”?
If they use their soapbox, then the public has the right to respond howsoever the public wishes–within legal limits. Their mere celebrity does not endow them with infallability. What is truly “tinyminded” is the attitude that ordinary people are not permitted to show their displeasure at how some celebrities choose to use the advantage they have over ordinary people.
My comment was directed to an earlier post, which I neglected to quote, but will do so now:
I do happen to agree with Cessandra’s observation that it is the country/conservative variable that is signifigant in this matter, but I do not think that Natalie was “wrong”, and certainly not just because she said something at odds with some of the people who listen to her music.
My comment was not directed towards those who are speaking/acting out because they disagree with her and want to send that message out publically. I respect their views on the subject and they should feel free to express those views however they wish to.
\And I can feel free to be thankfull that I don’t have much in common with these people, aside from living in the same country and owning some of the same CD’s (at least untill they trashed their copy).
Supportive Dixie Chicks fans can act as well…boycott the boycotting radio stations, boycott their sponsors, call in and request Dixie Chicks music. Last night at the local dyke bar, karyoke night was dominated by Dixie Chicks songs as drinks were raised and everyone avoided going home to be depressed by the late night News.
