Were the Dixie Chicks wrong?

Diogenes how is it “tiny-minded”? What’s wrong with not buying a CD if you disagree with the political statements of the band? You need to make some sort of a case for why this is wrong. I simply have no idea why you believe this.

Debaser,
I think it’s narrow minded to suddenly turn on an artist that you previously liked simply because they make a mild political statement that you don’t like. I’ve mentioned before in this thread that Ted Nugent constantly trashes liberals but I still have several of his old albums. It doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy his music, and I didn’t act like it was the outrage of the century everytime he said something bad about Clinton. I think the people trashing the DCs are just being really immature and intolerant.

No more than the DC’s using their soapbox to get their voices heard.

What if you were to find out that Sammy Hagar for example was using his $$$ to promote something you strongly were opposed to, say capital punishment, handgun laws or abortion. Whatever position you support someone out there is opposed to it. If you continue to support (send money to) these people are you not ignorant for doing so.

Why in the world would I donate money the the NRA if I felt gun laws were too lenient? Why would I send money to a public figure, one with a large audience, if they spoke out against the things I support?

Get with the program people, this is not necessarily ignorance in motion. Some people are apparently more passionate about their postion in this regard than others. Perhaps their behavior could be used more productively…but that is their choice NOT yours.

Personally, I disagree with the millions who have marched on cities worldwide against the disarming of Hussein.
BUT, I understand their position and it’s their right to do so.

Would you continue to VOLUNTARILY finance a public figure who openly praised and promoted the war?

Namecalling is less mature than a semi-organized boycott, wouldn’t ya say?

Good point, DrDeth.

Yes. I know. I’ve got it. But, why? Why do you think this?

So, it doesn’t bother you to listen to Ten Nugent, even though you disagree with him. Great for you. I fail to see, however, how this makes you superior to the people who don’t feel this way.

I will try and kick start this with explaining why it might bother some poeple.

Buying a CD is giving $17 to someone. You are supporting them. The fact that many people buy Dixie Chicks CD’s means that the Dixie Chicks are able to live in luxourious homes and tour the world in million dollar jets. People are aware of this. (They watch MTV cribs.) It bothers fans to know that they have been supporting someone who believes things they find offensive. They feel duped.

People listen to music as much for the personalities of the bands as the actual music itself. If people think “Those Dixie Bitches, bad mouthing the POTUS on the eve of war” every time they hear a Dixie Chicks song, then they don’t want to own the CD anymore.

IANADCF (Dixie Chicks Fan), but I found her comments to be offensive. If I were a fan, I might stop buying or listening to her CD’s. It would bother me to be supporting someone who has these views. I would associate the music with those views. It would make me not want to be a fan any longer.

There ya go: two reasons. Can you give me two back?

Disclaimer: Just re-stating your opinion over again doesn’t count.

Well, there is one difference. If I loved the music of Englebert Humperdink, and then found out through a “FoaF” or a gossip sheet that he is privately very much in favor of something I oppose- then I would still buy and enjoy his music. But if Englebert went out and used his “bully pulpit” and his name to push his agenda- then he has equated Humperdink with= what I oppose. Then, no, I don’t buy his music anymore. Nor would I enjoy it as much. It was his choice to use his soapbox.

So, whatshername of the Chicks used her soapbox to shout her views out to the world, thus her fans- if they disagree strongly enough- have every right to boycott her. Without being called “narrow minded” or “intolerant”.

Thanks debaser- back at cha!

Let the buyer beware. From the very beginning of their career, these musicians have been outspoken about their leftward leaning views. Anyone remember *Goodbye Earl *? How about Sin Wagon

While I do enjoy their music, I have not closely followed all of the activities of TDC in recent years, but I can confidently say that I was not surprised to find that Natalie feels the way she does, and I find it hard to swallow that her statement alone blindsided so many people to such a degree.

There is something else going on, a few things actually. The current state of the world has tensions and emotions rising. TDC and their conservative fans have been fair weather friends untill now, but I argue that conservative fans had to be either tolerant of or oblivious to the quirks of their former Chicks friends, untill now.

If they were oblivious, welcome to reality. If they were tolerant, then I suppose a dismissive comment about our fearless leader (coupled with the pressures of the brink of war) was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

It’s too bad that the concept of over-reacting doesn’t do well in a debate forum.

I’ve found a new dictionary definition for “stupidity”:

The degree to which an act resembles being a country music singer and dissing a conservative president of the USA.

Hey, I’ve got a GREAT idea! How about I market a line of organic foods and be a keynote speaker at an “Operation Rescue” rally! What, that would offend my primary market demographic? But I have the RIGHT to speak out! If they don’t buy my stuff, then they’re being tinyminded!

I’ve got a question: Was “divestment” of stock in companies that had holdings and operations in South Africa likewise “tinyminded”? After all, money spent that buys Dixie Chicks materials supports their activities MORE than money spent on stocks bought on the open market would have supported a company with Apartheid-era South Africa operations.

Well, while we’re at it, can someone please explain to me how her comment implies being ashamed of Texas? She said she was ashamed that one particular man was from Texas, right? How does being ashamed of the state follow from that? I’m not trying to be a smartass, I’m just not following the logic here.

I also don’t understand how critcizing one person, or foreign policy, or the Sacajawea dollar, or any other single aspect of America equates to criticizing the whole country or our troops.

Ah, yes. Anger at and opposition to spousal abuse being “leftward-leaning views.”

Dixie Chicks Career Suicide Move #2:

Posing for PETA

At least they’re prettier than K.D. Lang…

Not necessarily, but producing a song about supplimenting impotent restraining orders with premeditatedly poisoned black-eyed peas isn’t exactly conservative either.

My point was that this was not a sudden outbreak of liberalism from previously red-blooded patriots.

Nor is it any way, shape or form “liberal.”

We’re talking about vigilante justice, which I would suggest sounds just fine to most “redneck white trash,” as they have been called in this thread.

I happen to disagree. Here I am, a white man, and I’m everybody’s asshole:

Women think I am oafish and horny

Gays think I am blatently macho and overtly heterosexual.

Black people think I’m oppressive and physically inferrior

Asians think I’m fat, lazy, and stupid.

YOU GOT AN AXE TO GRIND? I’M FUCKIN’ PAUL BUNYAN OVER HERE!

Something else, although it may be considered jumping the gun to stop buying CDs from a performing artist or going to movies that have an actor who’s made political statements you disagree with, it does happen to be the only outlet we have for letting them know that we disagree with what they spout. It is one of the few tools that we have at our disposal, our wallets. I say we use it.

Case in point: James Taylor recently commented that he believed that Eminem was a genius, so AFAIAK his credibility as a thinking human being is shot to shit, so I doubt I’ll be taking anything he says seriously in the future. I won’t be seeing a movie starring Richard Gere after the absolutely STUPID remarks he made on stage right after 9/11. People who say stupid things (stupid in my opinion) get no more of my money. Pretty soon I imagine I’ll be a rich man.

Carry on…

Texican, do NOT call people idiots in GD, no matter what they may say.

[Moderator Hat OFF]

Kinda related, I did not watch the pagent…but did check out the last part where the five finalists had to answer a question. Mrs. Texas’ response was in favor of sensorship regarding celebrities speaking against the war and our prez.

She did NOT win the Ms. USA pagent last night.

Maybe because of her answer?

I have one, maybe. When I buy a CD, or hire a plumber, or buy Dogface’s organic vegetables, it’s transactional. I’m making the purchase based on what I think the worth of the good or service is. It doesn’t seem to me that the opinion of the seller effects the quality of the good…Dogface’s peas are good whether he supports Operation Rescue, NARAL, or thinks both groups are silly.

Obviously with music, as with literature, it can be a different case, because the musician or the author can put his views in his work. But it doesn’t seem like the Dixie Chicks are doing this in this case. So, I don’t see the relevance in not buying their product here

Make that CENSORSHIP.
I gotta start previewing these things, sorry.

I just got this today from a good friend of mine in Texas…

I am sorry as I do not have a link. I thought it was a very good observation from a Texan who is also a active military pilot.

This was out of a radio station in Lubbuck, I am trying to find out exactly which one… (sorry for not having it on hand)

An open letter to the Dixie Chicks:

Earlier this week, while performing in London, you stated that you were ashamed that our President is from your home state. I wonder if you realized how many Americans would be listening. This American was listening. This Texan is ashamed that you come from my state. I serve my country as an officer in the United States Navy. Specifically, I fly F-14 Tomcats off carriers around the world, executing the missions that preserve the very freedom you claim to exercise. I have proudly fought for my country in the skies over Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan without regret. Though I may disagree wholeheartedly with your comments, I will defend to the death your right to say them in America. But for you to travel to a foreign land and publicly criticize our Commander in Chief is cowardice behavior. Would you have so willingly made those comments while performing for a patriotic, flag-waving crowd of Texans in Lubbock. I would imagine not. How dare you pocket profits off songs about soldiers, their deaths and patriotism while criticizing their Commander in Chief abroad, even while they prepare to give their lives to ensure your own freedom of speech. Please ask yourself, what have you done to deserve that sacrifice? Do not try to justify your comments by claiming that you made them only because you care about innocent lives. Never once in our history have we committed troops to war for the purpose of taking innocent lives. We do it to protect innocent lives, even yours. If the world leaders of the late 1930’s had the vision and courage of our present Commander in Chief, perhaps the evil men who caused the death of millions in WWII would have never had the opportunity to harm a soul. The potential loss of millions of lives in the future at the hands of today’s evil men necessitate action. In a separate correspondence, I am returning to you each and every Dixie Chicks CD and cassette that I have ever purchased. Never again will I allow my funds to support your behavior. All you have done is to add your name to a growing list of American “Celebrities” who have failed to realize that they have obtained their successes on the backs of the American blue-collar workers such as our servicemen and women.

To Natalie Maines: This Texan, this American will continue to risk his life to guarantee your freedoms. What will you do to deserve it?
