However much I might not agree with them, my answer remains the same. Anyone, deserves to hold free thought and free speech as their highest values. There cannot be anything wrong with that or all human life will perish from this earth.
Let us not forget what a well versed French (FREEDOM?) Philosopher once said:
“I may not agree with what you say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it.”
But I don’t expect people to fund the promotion of opinions they don’t hold. Giving money to the Dixie Chicks allows them to pursue a larger audience. Since they use that moment in front of an audience to promote their politics, giving them money is indirectly support their views.
This is one of those cases where it’s the knowledge that hurts. And it’s the Dixie Chicks who provided that knowledge. Now, they get to live with the consequences.
As for me? I don’t agree with their statement, but I have no beef with them. That doesn’t mean mine is the only reasonable reaction.
Update: After seeing the national outrage, 40% drop in record sales, CD bondfires, and many radio station bannings, Maines has issued a written apology for her statements.
Typical weaseling. That sort of behavior only reinforces the need that society has to severely spank celebrities who use their money and fame to try to bully ordinary folks.
The Dixie Chicks still have the #1 Country Album according to Billboard Magazine. According to their website, none of DC upcoming concerts have been cancelled. Sounds like** DC** are crying all the way to the bank.
