Have fun with your bird. I’ve heard lots of good things about them.
I rented a room from a guy who bred and sold all kinds of cockatoos and cockateils. I can tell you that they REALLY like to chat it up when the sun rises! There were a couple dozen of the little fuc…er…feathered friends just down the hall from my room and there was NO SUCH THING as sleeping in.
Greys can choose favorite people, and they may like or dislike people based on gender, hair color, phase of the moon, whatever. They can be trained to have good manners, my greys may grumble about having to be polite and interact with strangers, but they can step up without biting.
Many greys are territorial inside their cage, but can be handled away from the cage. Never try to control them with fear or punishment, they won’t understand or learn from it. Yelling at them is a reward. My greys respond pretty well to “time outs”.
I think the rumor about them not liking men is pretty funny. All the greys at my house LLLUURVE my husband, and will stare at him all googy-eyed when he is in the room. Often, Steve bird and Zazu will cry and dance until he picks them up.
Washoe, that bird can be changed. Try the Guide to a well Behaved Parrot, or some of Sally Blanchard’s books to get started.
When I first read Washoe’s post, I had a mental picture of a grey attacking anything, while armed with…, um, erg.
Those are NOT standard parrot equipment.
