Actually my question is: Is it biologically (even if not physically) possible? Could someone create a San Bernarduahua test-tube style? Would it have a normal life expectancy? Has anyone ever done something like this (enormous breed + miniature breed)? What would (does?) something like this look like?
You don’t need a test tube. You just need the Bt Bernard to be a St Bernardette and lie down… which, oh yes, they will. This also solves the issue of having the puppies be larger than the bitch.
What do you get? A doggie. Specific looks and so forth will be partly random, partly a matter of dominant genes, partly averaged; yesterday i saw a dog that looked like a German Shepherd head stuck on a Border Collie body, but usually mongrel dogs aren’t that chimera-like.
Several years ago a basset hound was crossed with an english bull dog and the offspring were show quality St Bernards.
I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE THE DAY!!!
I’ve been using this messageboard for ten years and I’ve seen this question asked probably about 4 or 5 times.
Without fail the first seven or eight replies all go along the lines of “I don’t think a mini-dog vagina would take a mega-dog penis!” and/or “I don’t think a mini-dog vagina could bear a mega-dog offspring!”
Then the ninth reply says “Hey! What if the mega-dog is the female and the mini-dog is the male???” This reply gets overlooked by everyone who has gotten all excited to join in the big dog dick chorus!
And now, after all these years Nava has saved us from yet another repetition by positing little dog dick in the very first reply! Thank you, Nava! You have done this messageboard a great service and have elevated the level of discourse (much as the female St. Bernard elevates the male Chihuahua)! A new day is dawning!
I don’t believe this is possible.
Eric Bogle wrote a song about a Chihuahua romancing a St. Bernard.
A dog that can’t hold its liquor.

Oops. Above link to St. Bernard / Chihuahua puppy pic broken.
In case anyone is wondering, MonkeyMensch’s punchline is very funny.
you get a Chinard.
it is a very large sized dog with short legs. male dogs are said to be cranky and irritable.
I merely happen to know someone whose Lab bitch went down for a Pom…

Wouldn’t Bechi be more accurate then?
Funny, I’ve heard it was mainly sheep, and it’s not like Australia can cast stones in this area either.
I slightly misquoted the article, one of the off spring was said to look like a show quality St Bernard. This was avery old article from the 1980’s but I believe the breeding tests were conducted ay UCLA.
And made a Pompadour Retriever?
What I find most difficult to believe is that two such relatively small breeds could produce something as large-bodied as a St. Bernard. I would think that neither would have the alleles producing large size. The fact that both are short-legged would also argue against it. However, if there were two different genes producing short legs by different mechanisms in bassets and bulldogs perhaps in combination they could produce longer legs.
Maybe the milk/mail was delivered by a St Bernard?
“I got a really big head and little bitty arms”

“I’m given her all I got, Captain!”
