In the book, Lewis referenced Norse mythology by naming the Chief of Secret Police “Fenris Ulf.” Why did the movie change it to “Morgrim”?

They didn’t. Editions varied on the name for some reason.
Personally, I think “Fenris Ulf” is ridiculous and corny. It would really distract me from the actual events and make me go: :rolleyes: . So I think “Maugrim” is good. It references nothing, but you instinctively know that Maugrim is one dangerous mofo.
I’m told Lewis preferred Fenris Ulf. That would be one of his few bad moves, IMHO.
I have a “Fenris-Ulf” edition at home. When I was reading it to my kids, I read it to them with that name (not knowing that there were other editions).
My son had to do a book report and chose to do it on TLTW&TW. My kids can be hard on books, and I didn’t want mine destroyed (it was part of a set) and so I bought him his own copy. Sure enough, the copy he has has Maugrim as the wolf’s name. He picked up on the difference right away.
As for the OP, I happen to like wolves (Zev means “wolf” in Hebrew); but if that’s what’s got this guy riled up, he needs to get a life.

My recollection of the story is that after Lewis sent the book out to be printed, he decided to make some minor changes (there are one or two others) but the UK versions were already too far along in the process to be changed. The edits did make it into the American editions which were first printed somewhat later. I think the editions I’ve got from the late '70’s have the American text, but some time ago all English-language editions were standardized with the original, UK text. Which means that once again Douglas Gresham has messed up the way Lewis wanted things, but I must admit that in this instance I too think Maugrim is a better name.

Maugrim is the same as Fenris Ulf? :eek: I wondered why the movie didn’t have Fenris Ulf in it.
So, I guess this means that the Doper Fenris didn’t take his screen name from Lewis.

It was in the mid-1990’s, the same time that the books were renumbered. It apparently was Douglas Gresham’s decision to eliminate the changes made in the American edition and to renumber the books. I really do not trust this guy.
