What a stupid way to lose 20 bucks

No , not a bet

I picked up my new toy about two weeks ago and its a HP Ipaq 6955 with onboard bluetooth, wireless, cellular and GPS in addition to the normal suite of PDA goodies. The camera software sucks except maybe for the GPS tagging on the photo, but thats why god invented bluetooth.

Lately I have been playing around with both Google mobile and Microsoft live search. Its a (A)GPS application that shows your location to a few yards, but both business plans at the moment require an open data connection rather than downloading and caching the maps , but using the the cell network to show the content.

Now for the stupid me part. I like listening to podcasts and have the software set up to check for updates daily at 6 am. Normally I have the cell turned off and the Wifi turned on cause I dont trust the device to decide that the cell signal is better for the data connection.

For this I have a paygo account that limits what damage might occur and I had just dropped twenty on fido, and that night, I forgot to turn off cell and turn on wifi. This morning I wake up to a little screen on my paq and get this really horrible feeling that my phone account is a little lighter today.

All I could think was thank god I had not put the contract sim card in the Ipaq , cause this could have been way more expensive.

Speaking of stupid, I’m feeling really stupid right now because I’ve read the OP twice and I still have no idea how you lost twenty bucks.

Scarlett, who keeps her electronic toys to a minimum

In Canada , cellular data rates are expensive unless you have a plan. The new Iphone that came out from apple has a special rate of 6 gigabytes for 30 dollars a month.

Since I have a pay as you go account the data rates are very much higher. I cant justify the data plan at the moment, so I use the wifi instead of the cellular for data connection.

What I did was top up the paygo account with 20 dollars and six hours later it went poof because I connected to the internet via cell phone instead of wifi.
