My Daughter is 11.She is in dance. They wear makeup for their competitions.
I’ve noticed that sometimes she wears some to school, but haven’t said anything. They have apparently taught them to apply it tastefully. She doesn’t wear much and it doesn’t hurt anything and at least I know that she washes her face.
My parents never totally restricted me from wearing makeup as long as it was appropriate to the setting. Never more than a light lipstick really. At 13 I really got interested, but that wore off really quick because it was a pain to put on and take off. Too much work, and I wasn’t interested. At 15 I started wearing it again and really took time to learn how to wear it well. It still takes me a while, but it’s always subtle and appropriate to the occaision. My parents haven’t had much cause for complaint as my ultimate goal was always class. I don’t wear it every day, but usually when I go out I do.
My 8 year old is allowed to wear a sheer lip tint when we go out to dinner, if she asks. She has never asked to wear anything in addition to the lip tint, I’m playing it by ear.
Her ears have been pierced since she was 18 months old.
I started wearing makeup (lipstick, mascara, eyeshadow) in junior high – WAAAY back in the early to mid '70s. I didn’t wear foundation because my mom felt it wasn’t good for my complexion.
This is the same timetable I used for my daughter – I bought her makeup and gave her the makeup lessons at the beginning of middle school. Around here middle school starts with 6th grade. In our case, makeup was a little problematical because Dori has CP and I was afraid that her fine motor problems would prevent her from applying the stuff evenly. Actually, she’s doing pretty well with it – even the mascara, which I felt would be the big problem. She wore the full magilla steady the first few weeks of school (probably because of the novelty). Then she stopped wearing it for several weeks or months – didn’t want to go to the trouble. Now, she’s fallen in with a group of girls who are very girly – giggly and with a large interest in clothes and makeup and she’s back to wearing it every day. She has the occasional Tammy Faye day, but looks pretty good over all.
