What am I in for? (dental surgery question)

I had what I thought was an abscessed tooth bothering me for a few days. Prescribed painkillers helped quite a bit, and during my appointment my dentist made an incision inside my mouth and drained the abscess. He referred to my condition as a cyst, and decided that I need some sort of surgery to remove/correct the problem.

He also mentioned that I had some sort of bone deformity in my upper jaw that would require “grafting”. I’m just wondering what I am in for, how long I’ll be out of work, how bad this will hurt, and what exactly does “grafting” bone entail?

Is he going to cut out a chunk of bone and throw it out? What kind of tools/anasthesia are required for such an operation? Have any of you had any similar experience?

Some clues would be appreciated, thanks!

When I was in high school, they found a tumor under one of my molars. It had to be removed and tested to check for malignancy, and the molar it was under had to be removed as well. That was a similar experience to when I had my wisdom teeth out. General anesthesia (knocked out completely), out of school for two days, much Vicodin, soft foods for several days after.

In bone grafting, what they’ll do is remove a bit of bone from another area of your body (often it’s the hip, I think, I used to work with oral surgery operative reports, and I’m fairly sure that was a common spot to harvest the bone) and implant it into the spot where you need more bone. Aside from that, I can’t really tell you much else.

Good luck.

I don’t have any experience with this procedure, but I would think that any reputable dentist would be more than willing to answer your questions. Why don’t you just ask your dentist?!

If he/she won’t discuss it, find another dentist, quick.
