My little brother was examining a box of animal crackers earlier today and asking my mother and me about the animals portrayed there. Most of his questions were easy to answer, but when he got to “what are baby gorillas called?” we were both stumped.
We tried a few encylopedias, four different search engines, and even the Straight Dope archives. So far we have yet to find a reference to what a baby gorilla is called aside from “a baby gorilla.” Is there no special classification for infant apes?
My little brother looked so disappointed when I told him that they’re just called babies that I was tempted to lie and tell him that they’re apelings. Ah well. Honesty before entertainment.
