What are British chips - not fries - called in America?

We do have distinctions, but most eateries only have one kind of fry. So you can ask for steak fries, but they may only have shoestrings.

My experience with Fish&Chips here in New England, at my own restaurant and others, is that 3/8" to 1/2" square cut fries are served with the fish. A steak fry would be rectangular, at least twice that size, and that’s what I recall eating in England.

OMG, that looks good! :o

Cottage fries

Also see the terms “home fries” and “steak fries” as noted above.

Hah! The Guestling does this with frosties from Wendys. At least now I know he isn’t the only one to dip fries into ice cream

God, I haven’t had fries with a Frostie in years. A friend of mine introduced me to that as a kid. Pure heaven.

Far from it.

Fries and Frosty predates the Reformation.

Yeah, me, too. I much prefer skinnier fries … if they’re not too crisp.

You may be using the wrong potatoes. Maris Piper all the way!

Here’s a chart of all the styles of french fries. Om nom nom.

If they’re going to be counting tater tots and cottage fries as “kinds of French fries”, then they really ought to have crisps/chips, too. Probably several types of them.

This is interesting for personal reference, but it’s not really going to help you specify your desired fries in an actual restaurant.

I’ve never seen a potato tornado in the wild, but boy would I like to.

I’ve had them a couple of times, they are as good as they look.

I want to try a cheese potato-tornado.

Looking at that chart, I’ll note that “smileys” (the last entry on their list) are typically not sliced-and-fried potatoes. The biggest manufacturer of those is McCain, with their “Smiles” product, and they’re actually mashed potatoes with a crispy exterior.

They’re called JoJos where I live, but that may be a midwestern peculiarity.

Also calling them potato wedges is common here.

I had never heard of steak fries, perhaps they need a seasoning for that.

I don’t know if you’re just asking for edification, or you’re planning on a trip to the USA in the near future, but be aware it is vanishingly unlikely that asking for steak fries will work unless that’s something the restaurant already serves. So don’t jump right to the insult tip because the kitchen only makes regular fries.

I’m pretty sure this is a BINGO card. I want to play.

I literally almost spit out my chips (crisps) when I read this.
